Steelhead are the anadromous form of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss): they hatch in freshwater, migrate to the ocean or large lakes, and usually return to freshwater to reproduce. The same species also includes resident rainbow trout, making steelhead a life-history form rather than a separate species.1
Steelhead are migratory rainbow trout whose life cycle includes a substantial period in salt water or a large inland lake. Adults spawn in gravel beds in freshwater, and their young initially resemble resident rainbow trout. After growing for one or more years, juveniles undergo physiological changes called smoltification, allowing them to move into brackish water and the sea. They later return to freshwater, often navigating hundreds of kilometres to reach spawning habitat.1
Unlike most Pacific salmon, steelhead can survive spawning and migrate downstream again, so some spawn more than once. Their life histories are flexible: age at migration, time at sea, body size, and the number of spawning attempts vary among rivers and populations. This flexibility helps explain why steelhead are treated as a biological form of O. mykiss, not a distinct species.2
Native steelhead occur around the North Pacific, especially along the Pacific coast of North America and in northeastern Asia. In North America their range extends from California northward through British Columbia and Alaska, with major populations associated with rivers such as the Columbia and Sacramento systems.1 Introduced populations occur in several other parts of the world.
Adults commonly have a streamlined, silvery body, a dark back, and a pink or red lateral stripe, though appearance changes with age, habitat, and spawning condition. Marine growth generally produces larger fish than freshwater residence. Steelhead depend on cool, oxygen-rich water, clean spawning gravel, connected channels, and adequate streamflow; dams, water diversion, warming, sediment, and habitat loss can therefore affect different life stages in different ways.3
Steelhead support recreational, subsistence, and historically commercial fisheries, but many populations are now managed under restrictive regulations because abundance and survival vary sharply among watersheds. In the United States, numerous distinct population segments on the West Coast are listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act.
Conservation combines watershed restoration with changes to dams, water management, fishing rules, hatchery operations, and monitoring. Hatcheries can provide fish for fisheries or reintroduction, yet they may also create genetic and ecological risks when hatchery fish interbreed with wild fish or compete for limited habitat. Managers therefore distinguish natural-origin and hatchery-origin fish, track their spawning success, and increasingly use genetic and electronic-tag data to identify migration routes and survival bottlenecks.4
Steelhead and resident rainbow trout can be descendants of one another, and individuals may change life-history pathways within a population. A fish that would normally migrate can remain in freshwater, while offspring of resident fish may acquire an anadromous strategy when environmental conditions and inherited traits favor migration.2
Not all steelhead enter the ocean: in some interior river systems, trout use large lakes as marine-like growth environments. Populations also differ in whether adults return after one spawning season, and repeat spawners can be disproportionately valuable because they contribute offspring more than once. The familiar name therefore covers a mosaic of local adaptations rather than a single uniform migratory type. Even within one river, early migration timing, ocean entry, and spawning behavior can create distinct ecological groups that conservation plans must preserve.
“Steelhead” is a common name for anadromous or otherwise migratory Oncorhynchus mykiss; “rainbow trout” usually refers to the resident freshwater form. The distinction is ecological rather than taxonomic. In scientific and management contexts, “population,” “run,” and “distinct population segment” may refer to different levels of organization, so a local steelhead name does not necessarily denote a separate species or subspecies.1
Steelhead belong to the family Salmonidae, alongside Pacific salmon, char, and other trout. Their conservation status is assessed for particular populations or segments, not automatically for every fish bearing the common name. This is why legal protections and fishing rules can differ substantially between neighboring river systems.
