A hatchery is a facility where eggs are artificially incubated and young animals, primarily fish and poultry, are reared under controlled conditions. Hatcheries are central to modern aquaculture and poultry production, enabling large-scale breeding, disease management, and genetic improvement. They range from small, community-based operations to large industrial complexes, and they play a critical role in conservation efforts for endangered species. The term also applies to facilities for insects, reptiles, and even plants, though the most common usage refers to fish and poultry.
Fish hatcheries are used to propagate fish for commercial aquaculture, recreational stocking, and conservation. They typically involve broodstock management, spawning (either natural or induced via hormones), incubation of eggs in controlled water systems, and rearing of larvae and juveniles in tanks or ponds. Water quality parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH are closely monitored. Hatcheries have enabled the domestication of species like Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout, and they supply the majority of fish for aquaculture worldwide.1
In conservation, hatcheries are used to supplement wild populations, as with Pacific salmon in the Columbia River basin. However, hatchery-reared fish can have lower fitness and may compete with wild fish, leading to debates about their effectiveness.
Poultry hatcheries incubate fertilized eggs from chickens, turkeys, ducks, and other birds. Eggs are placed in large incubators that maintain precise temperature (about 99.5°F or 37.5°C) and humidity, with automatic turning to prevent embryo adhesion. After about 21 days for chickens, chicks hatch and are vaccinated, sexed, and shipped to farms. Modern hatcheries are highly automated, handling tens of thousands of eggs per cycle.2
Hatchery practices have been criticized for animal welfare issues, such as the maceration of male chicks in layer operations, leading to the development of in-ovo sexing technologies.
Hatcheries also exist for insects, reptiles, and crustaceans. Insect hatcheries are used for biological pest control, producing beneficial insects like ladybugs and parasitic wasps. Sea turtle hatcheries are established on beaches to protect eggs from predators and poaching, with hatchlings released into the wild. Shrimp hatcheries are a major component of marine aquaculture, providing post-larvae for grow-out ponds.3
In addition, some hatcheries specialize in ornamental fish for the aquarium trade, and there are even hatcheries for endangered amphibians, such as the mountain yellow-legged frog, where eggs are reared in captivity to boost wild populations.4
Hatcheries have a long history: the first fish hatchery in the United States was established in 1853 in Massachusetts, and the first in Japan dates to 1625. Some hatcheries are used for research, such as the zebrafish facility at the University of Oregon, which has contributed to genetic studies. In the 19th century, hatcheries were used to introduce non-native species, like the brown trout, to new continents. A niche practice is the use of hatcheries for coral reef restoration, where coral larvae are reared and then outplanted. Additionally, some hatcheries operate as 'living gene banks' for rare breeds, preserving genetic diversity. The term 'hatchery' is also used metaphorically in business to describe incubators for startups, though this is not a formal usage.
