A smolt is a juvenile salmon or sea trout that has undergone the physiological and behavioral changes (smoltification) preparing it to migrate from freshwater to the ocean. This stage follows the freshwater-dwelling parr stage and precedes the adult marine phase.
Smoltification is a complex endocrine-driven process that transforms a freshwater-adapted parr into a saltwater-adapted smolt. It involves changes in body shape (slenderer, more streamlined), coloration (silvery sides, dark fin margins), and behavior (schooling, downstream migration).1 The process is triggered by photoperiod and temperature, with thyroid hormones (thyroxine) and cortisol playing key roles. Gill Na+/K+-ATPase activity increases, enabling ion regulation in seawater.2
Smolts migrate downstream to the ocean, often at night, using river currents and tidal flows. They may travel hundreds of kilometers, and in large rivers like the Columbia, they pass through hydroelectric dams, where mortality can be significant.3 Once at sea, smolts face high predation and variable food availability; survival rates vary widely, from <10% to >50% depending on species and conditions. Some species, like Atlantic salmon, may spend 1–4 years at sea before returning to spawn.
Smoltification occurs in all Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.), Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), and sea trout (Salmo trutta). Timing varies: coho salmon typically smolt after 1–2 years in freshwater, while sockeye may smolt after 1–3 years.1 In some populations, such as those in the Arctic, smoltification may be delayed due to short growing seasons.4 Hatchery-reared smolts are often released to supplement wild populations, but they may have lower survival than wild smolts due to reduced natural selection.5
Smoltification is reversible in some cases; if smolts are prevented from reaching the sea, they may revert to parr-like state (desmoltification). The term 'smolt' also applies to the juvenile stage of some non-salmonid species, such as the grayling (Thymallus thymallus), though less commonly. In aquaculture, smoltification is induced artificially by manipulating light and temperature to produce smolts year-round, a practice known as 'smolt production' or 'photoperiod manipulation'.2 Smolts have been observed to use the Earth's magnetic field for orientation during their seaward migration, a phenomenon also seen in adult salmon.6
Smolt is a term also used in fisheries management to refer to the life stage targeted for conservation efforts.
