Museum of Contemporary Art, Isfahan

The museum opened in 2016 in a converted textile factory in the Abbasabad district of Isfahan, a city long celebrated for its artistic heritage. The adaptive reuse of the industrial structure preserves the original brickwork and large windows, creating a distinctive space for contemporary art. The conversion was part of a broader municipal effort to revitalize the area and bring modern culture to a city known for its Safavid-era masterpieces.

The museum's permanent collection focuses on Iranian contemporary art from the 1960s onward, including works by pioneers such as Parviz Tanavoli and Monir Farmanfarmaian, as well as younger artists. Temporary exhibitions feature both Iranian and international artists, often exploring themes of identity, tradition, and modernity. The museum also hosts biennials and collaborative projects with other institutions, positioning it as a key venue for contemporary art in Iran.¹

Beyond exhibitions, the museum runs workshops, artist talks, and film screenings aimed at engaging the local community and students. It has developed partnerships with universities and art schools, offering internships and research opportunities. One of the museum's distinctive features is its location in a former textile factory, a nod to Isfahan's industrial past. The building's industrial character is intentionally retained, with exposed beams and concrete floors, creating a raw backdrop for art. The museum also houses a specialized library and archive on Iranian contemporary art, which is a valuable resource for researchers. Additionally, it has hosted several notable international exhibitions, including a retrospective of German artist Anselm Kiefer, which was a rare event in Iran.³
