Brickwork is the construction technique of laying bricks in a patterned arrangement, typically bonded with mortar, to form walls and other structures. It is one of the oldest and most durable building methods, with evidence of brick use dating back to 7000 BC in the Near East.1
Brickwork bonds are systematic arrangements that interlock bricks to distribute loads and ensure stability. The most common bond is the stretcher bond, where bricks are laid lengthwise with overlapping courses, used in cavity walls. The English bond alternates courses of stretchers and headers, providing strong transverse ties, while the Flemish bond alternates stretchers and headers within each course, creating a more decorative pattern. Other bonds include the stack bond (all stretchers aligned, used for non-load-bearing panels) and the garden wall bond (a variant with three stretchers between headers). The choice of bond affects both aesthetics and structural performance; for example, English bond is stronger than Flemish bond for load-bearing walls.
Bricks are made from clay, shale, or concrete, and are classified as common, facing, or engineering bricks based on quality and strength. Fired clay bricks are produced in kilns at temperatures up to 1,200°C, which vitrifies the clay and imparts durability. Mortar, the binding agent, is typically a mix of Portland cement, lime, sand, and water. The proportions vary: a common mix is 1 part cement to 3 parts sand, but lime-based mortars are used for historic restoration to match the original softness. The mortar must be softer than the bricks to allow for differential movement and to prevent cracking. Modern mortars often include plasticizers to improve workability.
Proper brickwork requires careful technique: bricks are laid on a full bed of mortar, with vertical joints filled by 'buttering' the ends. The mason uses a trowel to spread mortar, then taps the brick into place to achieve a consistent bed joint of about 10 mm. A level and line are used to ensure courses are straight and plumb. For cavity walls, wall ties are embedded to connect the inner and outer leaves. Expansion joints are incorporated to accommodate thermal movement. In modern construction, brickwork is often reinforced with steel bars in the mortar joints for seismic resistance.2 Skilled bricklaying is labor-intensive, but prefabricated brick panels and automated laying robots are emerging to increase efficiency.
Brickwork has been used for millennia, with early examples in the Indus Valley civilization (c. 2500 BC) and ancient Rome, where bricks were used in aqueducts and the Colosseum. The Romans developed the fired brick and introduced the use of lime mortar. In medieval Europe, brickmaking declined but revived in the 12th century, leading to the Gothic brick architecture of northern Germany and the Netherlands. The Industrial Revolution brought mass production, making bricks affordable and ubiquitous in Victorian-era cities. Notable brick structures include the Great Wall of China (brick sections), the Taj Mahal, and the Empire State Building's brick facade.3
Beyond the common bonds, there are over a dozen recognized bonds, including the Monk bond (two stretchers between headers) and the Rat-trap bond, which uses bricks on edge to create a cavity, saving material and improving insulation. The English cross bond is a variation with a header course offset. In terms of craftsmanship, the 'perpends' (vertical joints) must align vertically across courses for a clean appearance. A niche technique is 'gauged brickwork', where bricks are cut and rubbed to precise shapes for arches and decorative features, popular in 18th-century England. Additionally, 'brick staining' is a method to alter the color of existing brickwork without painting, using acid-based solutions. The world's largest brick building is the Hoffman Kiln in Germany, a historic ring kiln.4
