History and development

The UK's DTT service began with the launch of ONdigital in November 1998, a pay-TV platform operated by Carlton and Granada, using the DVB-T standard with MPEG-2 compression. The service struggled commercially, and after a merger with BSkyB's terrestrial arm, it was rebranded as ITV Digital in 2001, which collapsed in 2002.
