Broadband is a high-capacity transmission technique that enables simultaneous transmission of multiple signals and traffic types, providing high-speed internet access. The term is often used loosely to mean any always-on, fast internet connection, but technically it refers to a wide band of frequencies, as opposed to narrowband. Broadband has become a critical infrastructure for modern economies, enabling everything from streaming media to telemedicine and remote work.
Broadband in telecommunications refers to a transmission medium that can carry multiple data channels at once, using a wide range of frequencies. In the context of internet access, it denotes any connection that is always on and offers speeds significantly higher than the previous dial-up (narrowband) standard. The FCC historically defined broadband as at least 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload, but this threshold has been criticized as outdated, with many advocating for higher minimums. Technologies include DSL, cable, fiber-optic, satellite, and fixed wireless, each with distinct physical layer characteristics. It enables telework, e-learning, and telehealth, which became essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the digital divide persists: in the U.S., rural and low-income households have lower adoption rates, and the FCC's 2024 report noted that 24 million Americans lack access to fixed broadband at the 25/3 Mbps threshold. Community networks and municipal broadband have emerged as alternatives to commercial providers, often offering cheaper and faster service.
Beyond the common technologies, broadband includes lesser-known variants like power-line communication, which uses electrical wiring, and free-space optical communication, which uses lasers through the air. The term 'broadband' also applies to radio and radar, where it refers to wideband signals. Historically, the first transatlantic broadband cable, TAT-1, laid in 1956, carried 36 telephone channels, a far cry from modern fiber cables that carry millions. In the 1990s, the 'broadband' label was also used for ISDN, which offered 128 kbps, now considered narrowband. The FCC's 2015 net neutrality rules were partly justified by the need to ensure equal access to broadband, but were repealed in 2017, leading to ongoing debates.
