Test (born Andrew James Martin; March 17, 1975 – March 13, 2009) was a Canadian professional wrestler and actor, best known for his tenure in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) under the ring name Test. He was a one-time WWE Intercontinental Champion, one-time WWE European Champion, and one-time WWE Hardcore Champion, and also held the WCW Tag Team Championship twice.
Andrew James Martin was born in Whitby, Ontario, Canada, on March 17, 1975. He was a standout athlete in his youth, playing basketball and football, and later trained as a professional wrestler under the tutelage of Ron Hutchison at the Sully's Gym wrestling school in Toronto.1 He debuted in 1997 on the independent circuit in Canada, wrestling under his real name before being signed by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1998.
Martin was assigned to the WWF's developmental territory, Power Pro Wrestling, where he won the promotion's championship. He made his main roster debut in 1999 as "Test," a bodyguard for the Corporation stable, and quickly became embroiled in a storyline with Stephanie McMahon and Triple H.2 In 2000, he formed a tag team with Albert, and the duo won the WWF Tag Team Championship once. Test later captured the WWF European Championship and the Hardcore Championship, and in 2002 he won the Intercontinental Championship, defeating Edge at WrestleMania X8.3 He was released from WWE in 2004.
After a brief stint in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) in 2005, where he wrestled under his real name, Martin returned to WWE in 2006. He was repackaged as a heel and feuded with Bobby Lashley, but was released again in 2007 after a violation of the company's wellness policy. His final WWE match was a dark match loss to Kane in 2007.
Outside wrestling, Test appeared in the 2001 film Head of State and had a cameo in the 2002 film Rollerball. He also made appearances on the reality show Family Feud with fellow wrestlers.4 He was known for his signature finishing move, the "Big Boot," and his theme song "This Is a Test."
Test was one of the few wrestlers to hold the Intercontinental, European, and Hardcore championships simultaneously, a feat he achieved in 2002. He also had a brief stint as a commentator for WWE's Sunday Night Heat in 2003. In 2006, he was involved in a controversial storyline with the "Kiss Cam" segment that was later parodied. After his death, WWE acknowledged his contributions in a tribute video, and he is remembered for his powerful big boot and his role in the "Un-Americans" stable.
Test died of an accidental overdose of oxycodone and alcohol on March 13, 2009, just four days before his 34th birthday.
