Test (greyhound competition)

In greyhound racing, a test (also called a trial or schooling race) serves multiple purposes. Trainers use tests to assess a dog's current fitness level, to evaluate recovery from injury, or to introduce young dogs to the racing environment. Tests are often run under race-like conditions, including the use of starting traps and a lure, but they are not officially timed for betting purposes. The results help trainers decide whether a dog is ready for competitive racing or needs further conditioning.¹

There are several types of tests in greyhound racing. A schooling test is for young or inexperienced dogs to learn the mechanics of racing, such as breaking from the boxes and chasing the lure. A fitness test is used to gauge a dog's stamina and speed, often after a layoff. A trial test may be used to simulate race conditions for a specific distance or track configuration. Some tracks also use tests to evaluate a dog's ability to run in different weather conditions or on different surfaces.²

Tests are typically regulated by the governing body of greyhound racing in each jurisdiction. For example, in the United Kingdom, the Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB) oversees the registration of trials and tests. Test results are often recorded in a dog's official racing record, but they are not used for official rankings or betting. In some jurisdictions, tests may be required before a dog can be entered in a race, especially for dogs returning from injury or for those that have not raced for a long period.

While tests are common in professional greyhound racing, they also play a role in the sport's history and in the welfare of the dogs. For instance, some tracks have used tests to evaluate the suitability of greyhounds for adoption after their racing careers end. Additionally, tests have been used in scientific research to study the biomechanics of greyhound locomotion, as they allow researchers to observe dogs running at full speed in a controlled environment. In some countries, tests are also used to qualify dogs for specific races, such as those with restricted entry based on previous performance.
