Operation and Governance

ICARDA had deposited seeds in Svalbard before the war, and the withdrawal allowed it to regenerate its collection in Lebanon and Morocco. This event demonstrated the vault's practical value as a backup. In 2020, the vault received a large deposit of over 60,000 samples, including seeds from the Cherokee Nation, marking the first deposit by a Native American tribe. The vault also holds seeds of culturally significant crops, such as the 'Himalayan' rice varieties and various traditional European apple varieties.

The seeds are stored in a 'black box' concept, meaning that once deposited, they are not accessible to the public, and only the depositor can retrieve them. The vault also contains seeds of some unusual crops, such as the 'Svalbard poppy' and other Arctic plants, though these are not the primary focus.
