History

Svalbard formed in Bristol in 2011, emerging from the local DIY punk scene. The band's name is taken from the Norwegian archipelago, reflecting their interest in stark, cold landscapes. Their early releases, including the 2012 EP One Day All This Will End, established their sound—a fusion of post-hardcore, black metal, and shoegaze. They gained attention with their debut album When I Die, Will I Get Better? (2015), which was released on Holy Roar Records. The album's raw emotion and technicality earned critical acclaim, and the band toured extensively across Europe and the UK.1

Musical style and influences

Svalbard's music is characterized by contrasting dynamics: serene, melodic passages often erupt into aggressive, distorted sections. Guitarists Serena Cherry and Liam Phelan create a wall of sound, while drummer Mark Lilley provides a powerful rhythmic foundation. Vocalist Serena Cherry alternates between clean singing and harsh screams, addressing themes of mental health, social justice, and personal struggle. The band cites influences ranging from Deafheaven to Envy, and their sound has been described as "blackgaze" or "post-black metal."2

3

Discography and critical reception

Following their debut, Svalbard released It's Hard to Have Hope (2018) and When I Die, Will I Get Better? (2020), the latter being a re-recorded version of their debut with new artwork. Their third album, When I Die, Will I Get Better? (2020), was followed by The Weight of the Mask (2023), which was released on Translation Loss Records. Critics have praised the band for their emotional intensity and lyrical honesty. The Weight of the Mask was named one of the best metal albums of 2023 by several publications.

Live performances and tours

Svalbard is known for their intense live shows, which often feature audience participation and a strong sense of community. They have performed at major festivals such as ArcTanGent and Bloodstock, and have toured with bands like Employed to Serve and Conjurer. Their live set typically includes a mix of old and new material, with Cherry's stage presence drawing particular attention. The band has also been vocal about issues of sexism and harassment in the music scene, using their platform to advocate for safer spaces at shows.

5

Lesser-known aspects

Beyond their music, Svalbard has been involved in various side projects and collaborations. Serena Cherry has a solo project called Noctule, which explores black metal with themes of nature and fantasy. The band has also released a split EP with the band Rolo Tomassi. In 2021, they contributed a cover of "The Ballad of the Skeletons" by Allen Ginsberg for a tribute album. Additionally, the band's name has led to occasional confusion with the Arctic archipelago, and they have used this to highlight environmental issues, such as in their song "The Vanishing of the Tundra."3
