Potato (production company)

Potato was founded in 2012 by two former BBC executives, John Fairbairn and Nick Stoneman, who had previously worked on shows such as Top Gear and Frozen Planet.¹ The company was established as an independent production outfit, aiming to create high-quality factual and entertainment programming for UK broadcasters.

Potato has produced a range of programs, including Inside the Factory for BBC Two, which explores the inner workings of large-scale manufacturing, and Secrets of the Transport Museum for Channel 5. The company also produced Great British Home Restoration for Channel 4 and World's Most Scenic Railway Journeys for Channel 5, which has been praised for its cinematography.

Potato is part of the All3Media group, which was acquired by Liberty Global and Discovery Communications in 2014.² The company has a niche in 'observational documentary' and 'format-led factual', often focusing on industrial processes and engineering. One of its early productions was Big Bigger Biggest, a series that used CGI to explain engineering marvels, which aired on National Geographic and Channel 5.³ Despite its name, the company has no connection to the vegetable; the name was chosen as a memorable and distinctive brand.

Potato's productions have been nominated for and won several industry awards. Inside the Factory was nominated for a BAFTA in the Features category in 2017.⁴ The company has also been recognized for its innovative use of archive footage and CGI in factual storytelling.
