Board game
Photosynthesis is a strategic board game about growing and harvesting trees in a shared woodland. Designed by Hjalmar Hach and illustrated by Sabrina Miramon, it was published by Blue Orange Games in 2017. Players compete for sunlight, plant seeds, cultivate trees, and earn points by completing the life cycle of trees at advantageous positions on the board.
Photosynthesis turns the growth of a forest into an area-control and resource-management game. Each player manages a supply of trees in a distinctive color, while a rotating sun determines which trees receive light during a round. The theme is ecological, but the contest is abstract: players seek valuable spaces, restrict opponents’ access to sunlight, and time their harvests for maximum points.1

The central mechanism is a changing line of sunlight that makes board position matter from turn to turn. At the beginning of a player’s turn, trees in the sun’s path generate light points; taller trees can cast shadows that prevent smaller trees behind them from producing light. The sun then advances around the board, creating a shifting pattern of opportunity and obstruction.2
Light points pay for seeds, small trees, medium trees, large trees, and planting actions. A seed can become a tree through successive growth stages, but each space has limits on how many trees or seeds can coexist. A player may also collect a mature tree, removing it from the board and taking a scoring token associated with that terrain space. The most valuable tokens are generally available earlier, so harvesting is a timing decision rather than an automatic reward for leaving a tree in place.1
Strong play balances short-term light production against long-term access to high-value spaces. Planting near the center can offer more opportunities as the sun moves, but central positions also invite competition and can create blocking shadows. Trees on the outer rings may be easier to protect, yet they offer fewer planting options and can become less efficient as the game progresses.2
Players interact indirectly through spatial pressure rather than direct attacks. A large tree can deny light to several smaller trees, occupy a strategically important location, or make an opponent’s planned growth sequence more expensive. The public market of available seeds and trees adds another layer of competition, since a player who spends light points early may leave desirable pieces unavailable or force rivals into less efficient choices. The game therefore rewards forecasting the sun’s movement as well as reading opponents’ expansion plans.1
The board is not simply a score track with a forest drawn on it: its concentric layout creates a spatial puzzle in which the same tree can be productive from one sun position and obstructive from another. This makes orientation and shadow geometry more significant than the theme’s gentle presentation initially suggests.2
Photosynthesis also contains a built-in pacing structure. Sun rotations advance the game toward its end, while the supply of scoring tokens steadily decreases. A player who delays every harvest may develop an impressive forest but lose access to the best rewards; a player who harvests too quickly can sacrifice future light income. The game’s ecological language consequently describes a cycle of growth, competition, and renewal, but its deeper design is about converting temporary positional advantages into a limited number of scoring opportunities.1
The design has also received a related sequel, Photosynthesis: Under the Moonlight, which adds nocturnal elements and new rules rather than merely supplying additional trees. It is a separate expansion product and does not replace the original game’s core woodland system.3
