Panda (band)

Panda was formed in 2001 in Buenos Aires by vocalist and guitarist Andrés Ciro Martínez, guitarist Juan Pablo "Pollo" Raffo, bassist Felipe Barroso, and drummer Fernando "Pato" Raffo. The band initially played a blend of punk and pop, but quickly evolved into a more melodic indie rock style. Their debut album, Panda (2003), was released independently and gained attention in the local underground scene.¹

In 2005, the band signed with Sony Music Argentina and released their second album, Para ti con desprecio, which included the hit single "Cita en el quirófano." The album's success propelled them to national fame, and they toured extensively across Latin America.

Over the years, Panda has released five studio albums, with their most recent, El momento (2019), receiving critical acclaim for its mature songwriting and production. The band has also been nominated for several Latin Grammy Awards.²

Panda's music is characterized by catchy melodies, jangly guitars, and introspective lyrics that often explore themes of love, loss, and urban life. Their sound has been compared to bands like Los Rodríguez and Soda Stereo, but they have also incorporated elements of Britpop and post-punk.³

The band's lyrics, primarily written by Ciro Martínez, are known for their poetic and sometimes melancholic tone, often drawing on personal experiences and social observations. This lyrical depth has earned them a dedicated fanbase that resonates with their emotional authenticity.

Each album has shown a progression in their sound, from raw punk energy to more polished and experimental arrangements.¹

Despite their success, Panda has faced several challenges, including a brief hiatus in 2011 due to creative differences. During this time, Ciro Martínez released a solo album, Espejos, which was well-received and allowed him to explore new musical directions.⁴

The band is also known for their philanthropic efforts, participating in benefit concerts for environmental causes and supporting local charities in Buenos Aires.⁵

An interesting trivia: the band's name was originally "Panda" but they changed it to "Panda" for international releases to avoid confusion with a Mexican band of the same name. However, they later reverted to "Panda" for all releases after legal clearance.⁶
