Fiat Panda

The original Fiat Panda was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who aimed to create a simple, functional, and affordable car. It featured a flat, boxy body that maximized interior space while minimizing production costs. The design was so minimalist that the rear seats could be folded flat to create a bed, and the dashboard was a simple shelf.¹

The Panda was introduced in 1980 as a replacement for the Fiat 126. It was initially offered with two-cylinder and four-cylinder engines, and later with a four-wheel-drive version (Panda 4x4) that became popular for its off-road capability.²

The first generation (1980-2003) underwent several updates, including the introduction of the Panda 4x4 in 1983 and the diesel version in 1986. In 2003, the second generation was launched, designed by Giuliano Biasio, with a more rounded and modern look while retaining the practicality. It was named European Car of the Year in 2004.

The third generation, introduced in 2012, adopted a more rugged, SUV-inspired design. It has been continuously updated, with a mild-hybrid version added in 2020. The Panda has also spawned a commercial variant called the Fiat Qubo (based on the second generation).³

The Panda has become a cultural icon in Italy, often used as a first car, a delivery vehicle, and even a police car. Its simplicity and durability have made it a favorite among rally enthusiasts, with the Panda 4x4 competing in the Paris-Dakar Rally in the 1980s.

In addition, the Panda has been used as a base for electric conversions, with some companies offering retrofitted electric powertrains. The Panda's boxy shape has also made it a canvas for artists, with several custom designs appearing at auto shows.

One lesser-known fact is that the original Panda was designed to be assembled in just 12 hours, a record for the time. The car's name was inspired by the panda bear, symbolizing simplicity and friendliness.¹

Another edge case: the Panda 4x4 was one of the first small cars to offer four-wheel drive, and it was praised for its off-road capability despite its tiny size. The second-generation Panda was also available with a 'Climbing' trim that featured a raised suspension and protective cladding, anticipating the crossover trend.³

In 2023, Fiat announced that the Panda would be discontinued in its current form, with a new electric model planned for 2024, but the nameplate is expected to continue.
