Television
Canal Panda is a Portuguese pay television channel dedicated to children's programming, launched on 1 November 1996. It was the first Portuguese-language children's channel and has become a staple of Portuguese children's television, known for its panda mascot and a mix of animated and live-action content.
Canal Panda was launched on 1 November 1996, as the first Portuguese-language channel aimed at children.1 It was originally owned by a consortium that included the Portuguese media group Lusomundo and the Spanish company Sogecable. In 2007, the channel was acquired by Dreamia, a joint venture between ZON (now NOS) and Sony Pictures Television.2 Over the years, Canal Panda has expanded its reach to Angola and Mozambique, and it has also launched a sister channel, Panda Kids, in 2015.
Canal Panda's programming is primarily aimed at children aged 4–12, featuring a mix of animated series, live-action shows, and educational content. The channel is known for airing popular international cartoons such as Peppa Pig, Paw Patrol, and SpongeBob SquarePants, as well as original Portuguese productions like O Diário de Alice and Uma Aventura.3 The channel also produces local interstitial content featuring its panda mascot, which has become an iconic figure in Portuguese children's media.
Beyond its mainstream success, Canal Panda has several lesser-known facets. For instance, the channel's mascot, a panda named Panda, was originally designed by the Portuguese illustrator António Modesto. The channel also played a role in the early careers of several Portuguese voice actors, who provided dubbing for many of the imported shows. In 2002, Canal Panda launched a short-lived magazine, Revista Canal Panda, which included comics and activities for children. Additionally, the channel has been involved in social responsibility campaigns, such as promoting internet safety and healthy eating among children.4
Canal Panda has expanded beyond Portugal, with feeds in Angola and Mozambique, where it is available on local pay-TV platforms. The channel's international versions feature the same branding and much of the same programming, but with local advertising and scheduling adjustments. This expansion has helped solidify Canal Panda's position as a leading children's brand in Portuguese-speaking Africa.
Canal Panda is a registered trademark of Dreamia.
