Geography and municipal history

Mine occupies an inland position in central Yamaguchi Prefecture, north of the prefectural capital and west of the Japan Sea. Its territory includes low mountains, forested valleys, agricultural communities, and the exposed limestone plateau of Akiyoshidai. The modern city was created in 2008 through the merger of the former Mine city with Mitō and Shūhō towns, bringing the Akiyoshidai area and major cave attractions within one municipality.

The region is comparatively rural and has a dispersed settlement pattern rather than a densely built urban core. Roads connect Mine with Yamaguchi, Hagi, Shimonoseki, and other western Honshu destinations. The city’s identity is consequently tied less to metropolitan growth than to landscape conservation, tourism, agriculture, and the historical extraction of mineral resources.

Akiyoshidai and Akiyoshidō Cave

Akiyoshidai is a prominent karst plateau formed largely from uplifted limestone and shaped by dissolution over geological time. Its open grasslands, limestone pinnacles, sinkholes, and underground drainage make it one of Japan’s most recognizable karst landscapes. The plateau is protected within Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park and is central to the Mine-Akiyoshidai Karst Plateau Geopark.1

Akiyoshidō, beneath the plateau, is a large limestone cave with a public route through chambers containing streams, pools, and speleothems. The cave is known by the older name Kyōdō and is regarded as one of Japan’s major cave systems. Seasonal grass burning on the plateau, known as yamagaki, helps maintain the grassland landscape and reveals the relationship between local land management and karst conservation.1

Mining, geology, and local economy

Mine’s modern economic history was shaped by mining as well as by tourism. Coal was extracted in parts of the region, while limestone became especially important because the surrounding geology supplies material for cement and other industrial uses. The name Mine is therefore associated with both a municipal place-name and a broader landscape in which underground resources have influenced settlement and employment.

Mining and quarrying have also created a conservation challenge: the same limestone formations that support industry contain caves, fossils, groundwater pathways, and scientifically valuable landforms. The geopark framework presents these features together with local history and culture, encouraging visitors to understand the plateau as a living geological and social landscape rather than simply as a scenic viewpoint.

Lesser-known aspects

Mine’s karst is notable because much of its distinctive scenery is maintained by human land use rather than by wilderness alone. Annual burning prevents the plateau from reverting to dense woodland, supports grassland biodiversity, and keeps geological features visible; the practice also requires careful coordination because fire can threaten nearby facilities and communities.1

The underground landscape has scientific as well as recreational value. Caves record groundwater movement, mineral deposition, biological adaptation, and long-term changes in the regional environment. Mine also contains cultural properties associated with rural life and the former mining economy, so the municipality offers a useful case study in how a Japanese regional city links industrial heritage, geotourism, protected landscapes, and community stewardship.
