Beehive

A beehive is an enclosed structure in which honey bees of the genus Apis live and raise their young. Natural beehives, such as hollow trees or rock crevices, are used by wild colonies, while humans have developed managed hives—most commonly the Langstroth hive—to house domesticated bees for honey production and pollination services.1 The term also refers to the colony itself, which can number tens of thousands of individuals, and to the artificial structures designed to facilitate beekeeping.

Structure and function

The hive is a marvel of collective architecture. Wild colonies build combs of beeswax, with hexagonal cells that serve as nurseries for brood and as storage for honey and pollen. The comb is oriented vertically, and the colony maintains a constant temperature of about 35°C in the brood nest by fanning and evaporative cooling.

Managed hives replicate this structure with movable frames, allowing beekeepers to inspect colonies without destroying the comb. The Langstroth hive, patented in 1851 by Lorenzo Langstroth, uses standardized boxes with precisely spaced frames—the 'bee space' of 6–9 mm—which discourages bees from gluing parts together with propolis. This innovation revolutionized beekeeping by making honey extraction and colony management practical.

Types of hives

Beyond the Langstroth, several other hive designs exist. The top-bar hive, often used in developing countries, has bars across the top from which bees build natural comb; it is simpler and cheaper but yields less honey. The Warre hive, invented by Abbé Émile Warré, is a vertical top-bar hive that mimics natural tree cavities more closely. Skeps—woven straw baskets—were used for centuries but are now largely obsolete because they cannot be inspected without destroying the colony.

In Africa and Asia, traditional log hives and clay pots are still used, and the giant honey bee (Apis dorsata) builds single-comb nests in the open, which are harvested by cliff climbers in Nepal and India—a practice that is both dangerous and culturally significant.

Beekeeping and honey production

Beekeeping, or apiculture, is an ancient practice dating back to at least 7000 BCE, as evidenced by rock paintings in Spain. Modern beekeeping relies on movable-frame hives to manage colonies for honey, beeswax, and pollination services. A single strong colony can produce 30–60 kg of honey per year in good conditions, though yields vary widely by region and floral resources.

Honey extraction involves removing frames, uncapping the cells, and spinning them in a centrifuge. The honey is then filtered and bottled. Beekeepers also manage colony health, controlling pests such as Varroa destructor mites and diseases like American foulbrood. In recent decades, colony collapse disorder has highlighted the vulnerability of managed hives to environmental stressors.2

Lesser-known aspects

Hives have a rich cultural and scientific history. The term 'hive' also refers to a structure in which humans have kept bees for millennia, but the first movable-frame hive was not invented until the 19th century; earlier designs, such as the Greek straw skep, were used in Europe for over 2,000 years. In ancient Egypt, beekeeping was depicted in temple reliefs, and honey was used for medicinal and religious purposes.3

One surprising fact: bees can be trained to detect explosives and diseases by associating specific odors with food rewards—a technique that uses the hive's olfactory learning capabilities. Also, the 'waggle dance' of honey bees, decoded by Karl von Frisch, is a form of symbolic communication that conveys distance and direction to food sources, a discovery that earned him a Nobel Prize in 1973.4
