Gravity is a fictional superheroine appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. Created by writer Sean McKeever and artist Mike Norton, she first appeared in Teen Titans #69 (May 2009) as a member of the Teen Titans. Her real name is Meloni (Mel) Vane, and she possesses the ability to manipulate gravity, allowing her to fly, increase or decrease the weight of objects, and create localized gravitational fields.
Gravity was created by writer Sean McKeever and artist Mike Norton, debuting in Teen Titans #69 (May 2009) during the "Titans of Tomorrow" storyline.1 McKeever, known for his work on Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane and Gravity (a different character for Marvel), brought a fresh voice to the Teen Titans. Norton's art defined the character's visual identity. Gravity was introduced as a new member of the Teen Titans, and her initial storyline explored her struggle to control her powers and her desire to prove herself as a hero.
Meloni Vane is a teenage girl from San Francisco who gains gravity-manipulating abilities after exposure to a mysterious energy source during a confrontation with the villainous group the Fearsome Five.2 She is recruited by the Teen Titans to help combat a threat, and she quickly becomes a valued member. Her powers allow her to fly by reducing her own weight, increase the gravity on enemies to immobilize them, and create protective gravitational shields. She also demonstrates the ability to create localized gravity wells that can crush or trap opponents.
During her tenure with the Titans, Gravity faces personal challenges, including balancing her hero life with her family obligations. She develops a close friendship with fellow Titan Bombshell, and the two often work together in combat. In the "Titans East" storyline, she is captured by the villainous Deathstroke and forced to fight against her teammates, but she ultimately breaks free and rejoins the Titans.3
Gravity possesses the superhuman ability to manipulate gravitational forces within a certain radius. She can reduce her own mass to achieve flight, increase the weight of objects or people to pin them down, and create localized fields of intense gravity that can crush or distort matter. She has shown the ability to create gravity-based constructs, such as shields or barriers, and can even generate small black holes, though this is extremely taxing and dangerous.4 Her powers are limited by her concentration and physical stamina; overuse can lead to exhaustion and nosebleeds.
Gravity is one of the few characters in DC Comics to have a power set based entirely on gravity manipulation, a niche often explored in science fiction. Her design, with a black and white costume and a gravity symbol on her chest, was inspired by the concept of gravitational waves. In the comics, she is noted for her scientific curiosity, often discussing the physics of her powers with other Titans. She also has a pet cat named Newton, a nod to Sir Isaac Newton's laws of gravity.5 Despite her potential, Gravity has remained a minor character, appearing primarily in Teen Titans and related titles, and has not yet been adapted into other media.
