Plot

The film opens with Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock), a medical engineer, on her first space mission aboard the Space Shuttle Explorer, accompanied by veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Clooney). During a routine spacewalk to install a new instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope, Mission Control in Houston warns of a rapidly approaching cloud of debris from a destroyed Russian satellite. The debris strikes the shuttle, destroying it and killing the rest of the crew. Stone is sent tumbling into space, but Kowalski, using a Manned Maneuvering Unit, rescues her. They are left adrift with limited oxygen and no communication with Earth.

Kowalski and Stone make their way to the International Space Station (ISS), which has been evacuated and is in a decaying orbit. They use the station's Soyuz capsule to escape, but it has no fuel.
