Black (singer)

Colin Vearncombe was born in Liverpool, England, and grew up in the suburb of West Derby. He began performing in local bands in the late 1970s, adopting the stage name "Black" in 1981. His early work was influenced by post-punk and new wave, and he released his debut single "Human Features" in 1981 on his own label, A&M Records later picked him up.¹

In 1986, Black released the single "Wonderful Life", which initially charted modestly in the UK. After a re-release in 1987, it became a worldwide hit, reaching number 8 in the UK and top 10 in several European countries. The song's optimistic melody contrasted with its melancholic lyrics, and its music video, featuring Black in a rain-soaked street, became iconic.²

Despite the success of "Wonderful Life", Black never achieved the same commercial level again. He released several albums, including Comedy (1988), Black (1991), and Are We Having Fun Yet? (1993), but they were less commercially successful. He continued to record and perform, releasing albums such as The Given (2009) and Blind Faith (2015) under his own label.³

Black's music was characterized by his smooth baritone voice and sophisticated arrangements, drawing on pop, soul, and jazz. He cited artists like Frank Sinatra and Bill Withers as influences. His lyrics often explored themes of love, loss, and resilience, as exemplified in "Wonderful Life".⁴

Black was married to Camilla, and they had three children. He died on 26 January 2016, at the age of 53, from injuries sustained in a car accident in County Cork, Ireland, where he lived. His death prompted tributes from musicians and fans worldwide.

Black's early single "Human Features" was released on the indie label Rox Records, and he was part of the Liverpool post-punk scene. He also recorded under the name "Colin Vearncombe" for some releases. In the 1990s, he collaborated with other artists and contributed to soundtracks. His song "Wonderful Life" has been covered by numerous artists, including Katie Melua and Ace of Base, and has been used in films and commercials. Black was known for his reluctance to embrace fame, preferring to focus on his art.⁵
