Black (Bangladeshi band)

Black was formed in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 1999 by vocalist and songwriter Tahsan Rahman Khan, guitarist and songwriter Jon Kabir, bassist Mahmudul Karim Miraz, drummer Ferdous Alam, and keyboardist Farhan Tanvir.¹ The band emerged from the local underground scene, initially performing covers of Western rock bands before developing their own material.² Their name, 'Black', was chosen to reflect the band's preference for dark, introspective themes and a minimalist aesthetic.

Black's music is characterized by a blend of alternative rock, grunge, and post-grunge elements, with a strong emphasis on melodic hooks and Bengali lyrics. Their sound has been compared to Western acts like Nirvana and Radiohead, but with a distinctly Bangladeshi identity.³ The band's lyrics often explore themes of alienation, urban life, and social critique, setting them apart from more mainstream pop-oriented bands.

Black released their debut album, Utshorgo, in 2001, which was well-received and established them as a major force in the Bangladeshi rock scene.⁴ This was followed by Shongshoy (2003), Shobdo (2007), Ondhokar (2011), Shongram (2014), and Shomoy (2018).⁵ Their albums have consistently topped local charts, and songs like 'Amar Protikkha' and 'Bishonno Dupur' have become anthems for a generation.

Black is credited with helping to popularize alternative rock in Bangladesh, inspiring a wave of new bands in the 2000s.⁶ They have performed at major venues and festivals, including the Dhaka International Folk Festival, and have been featured in documentaries about the South Asian rock scene.⁷ Their influence extends beyond music, as their lyrics have been studied for their social commentary.

Despite their fame, Black has maintained a relatively low profile, rarely appearing on television or in mainstream media. The band has also been involved in philanthropic efforts, organizing benefit concerts for flood victims and supporting music education in rural areas. A notable trivia: the band's name was inspired by the color of the amplifier they used in their first rehearsal space, which was black. Additionally, lead vocalist Tahsan Rahman Khan is also a well-known actor and television host, which has sometimes overshadowed his musical career.
