Black (2024 film)

The film centres on Meera (Priya Bhavani Shankar), a blind woman living alone in a secluded house. One night, a stranger breaks in, and in self-defence she kills him. The next morning, she discovers the body and, unable to see, must rely on her other senses to navigate the situation. Police officer Arjun (Jiiva) arrives to investigate, but his suspicions soon fall on Meera. As the investigation deepens, Arjun uncovers that Meera's blindness may not be as complete as she claims, and that the dead man had a connection to her past. The narrative unfolds as a tense psychological duel, with Meera using her heightened senses to outmanoeuvre Arjun, who is himself grappling with personal demons. The climax reveals that Meera was not entirely innocent, and that the murder was premeditated, tied to a past trauma involving the victim's harassment. Arjun, realising the truth, chooses to help her escape, blurring the lines between justice and empathy.¹

Jiiva plays Arjun, a police officer with a troubled past, whose investigation becomes an obsession. Priya Bhavani Shankar portrays Meera, a blind woman whose vulnerability masks a sharp intellect. Supporting roles include Sarath Babu as a senior officer, R. N. R. Manohar as a forensic expert, and Mime Gopi as a local thug. The film marks the first on-screen pairing of Jiiva and Priya Bhavani Shankar.²

The film was produced by V. Mathiyalagan under the banner of Vansan Movies. Principal photography took place in and around Chennai and Ooty, with cinematography by R. B. Gurudev. The music was composed by Simon K. King, with the background score particularly noted for enhancing the thriller's tension. The film was shot in about 45 days, with a reported budget of ₹10 crore. The title 'Black' was chosen to reflect the theme of blindness and the darkness that envelops the protagonist's world.

Black was released on 11 October 2024, clashing with several other Tamil films. The film received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics. Baradwaj Rangan of Film Companion South wrote, "The film is a decent thriller elevated by Priya Bhavani Shankar's performance, but the writing lets it down in the second half." The Times of India gave 3/5 stars, noting that "Jiiva and Priya Bhavani Shankar hold the film together, but the predictable twists reduce the impact." The film performed moderately at the box office, grossing around ₹8 crore worldwide against its budget, and was later made available on OTT platform Aha Tamil in December 2024.

One of the film's notable aspects is its use of sound design to simulate Meera's perspective, with the audio mix carefully crafted to let the audience experience her world. The film was initially titled 'Andha Naal' (That Day), but was changed to 'Black' to avoid confusion with a classic 1954 Tamil film of the same name. The director, K. G. Balasubramani, had earlier made the acclaimed short film 'Kannadi' (Mirror) about a blind woman, which served as a precursor to this feature. The film's climax was reshot after a test screening, as the original ending was deemed too dark. Additionally, the role of Meera was originally offered to actress Aparna Balamurali, who declined due to scheduling conflicts. The film's title song, 'Kannil Vanna', was sung by Sid Sriram and became a minor hit on streaming platforms.
