In her 1927 study, she observed that waiters in a busy café remembered unpaid orders more accurately than paid ones, prompting her to investigate the phenomenon systematically. In a controlled experiment, participants performed 18 to 20 simple tasks, such as stringing beads or solving arithmetic problems; half were allowed to finish, while the other half were interrupted before completion. When asked to recall the tasks, participants remembered the interrupted ones about 90% better than the completed ones.1

Zeigarnik interpreted the results through Lewin's field theory, proposing that an unfinished task creates a state of tension in memory that persists until the task is completed. In productivity, the effect explains why people often feel compelled to finish tasks once started, and why to-do lists can be effective: the incomplete items create mental tension that drives completion.

In digital design, progress indicators and partially filled forms leverage the effect to increase user engagement and completion rates. The phenomenon also underlies the "cliffhanger" technique in serialized storytelling, where episodes end at a critical moment to keep viewers returning. However, the effect can also contribute to procrastination and mental fatigue when many tasks are left incomplete, as the persistent tension can be overwhelming.5

While the Zeigarnik effect is widely cited, its replicability has been questioned. A 2014 meta-analysis found that the effect is robust but smaller than originally reported, and that it is influenced by task type and the way recall is measured. Some researchers have argued that the effect may be an artifact of differential rehearsal or of the perceived importance of interrupted tasks.6

An often-overlooked nuance is that the effect may reverse when the task is perceived as trivial or when the individual is highly achievement-oriented: some studies have found that people with high need for achievement recall completed tasks better, possibly because they are motivated to finish and then move on. Additionally, the effect has been linked to the phenomenon of "mental time travel," where unfinished tasks intrude on thoughts, and to the "Ovsiankina effect," which describes the tendency to resume interrupted tasks spontaneously. Zeigarnik herself later moved away from the topic, and her later work focused on psychopathology, but the effect remains a cornerstone of cognitive psychology.7
