WorldWideWeb

The WorldWideWeb (also written as WorldWideWeb, or W3) is an information system that enables the sharing of documents and other web resources over the Internet, identified by URLs and interlinked by hypertext. It was invented by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 while working at CERN, and the first website went live in 1991. The Web is distinct from the Internet, which is the underlying network infrastructure; the Web is one of its most prominent services.

Origins and early development

The WorldWideWeb was conceived at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, as a solution to the problem of information loss and fragmentation among researchers. Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist, submitted a proposal titled "Information Management: A Proposal" in March 1989, and with the help of Robert Cailliau, a Belgian engineer, refined it into a working system. The first web browser, also named WorldWideWeb, was developed on a NeXT computer and was both an editor and a browser, reflecting the original vision of a collaborative authoring tool.1

The first web server, info.cern.ch, was launched in December 1990, and by August 1991, the Web was made available to the public outside CERN. The early Web relied on a set of core standards: HTML for markup, HTTP for transfer, and URLs for addressing. Berners-Lee deliberately kept these protocols open and royalty-free, which was crucial for the Web's rapid adoption. The first web page, explaining the project, is still preserved and can be accessed today.

Architecture and standards

The Web's architecture is based on a client-server model, where browsers (clients) request resources from servers using HTTP. The Uniform Resource Locator (URL) provides a global addressing scheme, and Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) defines the rules for transferring data. Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is the standard language for creating web pages, allowing for the embedding of links, images, and other media.2

Key standards are maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), founded by Berners-Lee in 1994 at MIT. The W3C develops and publishes open standards, including HTML5, CSS, and accessibility guidelines. The Web's decentralized nature is a fundamental design principle, ensuring that no single entity controls it. However, this has also led to challenges such as link rot, where URLs become invalid over time, and the need for persistent identifiers like DOIs to ensure long-term access to scholarly resources.3

Evolution and impact

From its academic origins, the Web rapidly expanded into a global phenomenon. The introduction of the Mosaic browser in 1993 and Netscape Navigator in 1994 brought the Web to the general public, leading to the dot-com boom of the late 1990s. The Web has since transformed commerce, communication, education, and entertainment, enabling e-commerce, social media, and cloud computing.4

The Web's impact is measured not only in economic terms but also in social and political spheres. It has facilitated the spread of information and the rise of citizen journalism, but also raised concerns about misinformation, privacy, and the digital divide. The Web has evolved from static pages to dynamic applications, with technologies like JavaScript, AJAX, and WebAssembly enabling rich user experiences. The mobile web, driven by smartphones, has made the Web accessible to billions, but also introduced issues of fragmentation and performance.

Lesser-known aspects

Beyond the well-known history, several niche aspects of the Web are often overlooked. The first web server was a NeXT computer, and the original browser was called "WorldWideWeb" (with no spaces), later renamed Nexus to avoid confusion. The Web was nearly named "Mesh" or "Information Mesh" before Berners-Lee settled on WorldWideWeb. The first web page was a simple text document explaining how to create pages, and it included a list of links to other early sites.1

The Web's early days saw the creation of the first webcam, which was set up at Cambridge University to monitor a coffee pot. The first web search engine, Wandex, was developed in 1993, and the first web conference, the WWW1, was held at CERN in 1994. The Web also has a dark side: the "dark web" is a part of the Web that is not indexed by standard search engines and requires special software like Tor to access. The Web's underlying protocols have been extended in surprising ways, such as the use of HTTP for non-web applications like streaming and IoT devices.5
