Background and preparation

The exhaustion of IPv4 addresses, the original Internet addressing protocol, made a transition to IPv6 essential. The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority allocated the last IPv4 blocks in 2011, and regional registries began running out soon after. To test readiness, the Internet Society organized World IPv6 Day on 8 June 2011, a 24-hour trial during which major companies like Google, Facebook, and Yahoo enabled IPv6 on their main websites. On 6 June 2012, World IPv6 Launch permanently activated IPv6 on participating networks and services. The event was marked by a live dashboard showing global IPv6 traffic, and it led to a measurable increase in IPv6 adoption. According to Google's statistics, the percentage of users accessing their services over IPv6 rose from about 0.2% to over 1% within months, and it has continued to climb, reaching over 30% by 2020.

Technical and operational challenges

One of the key challenges addressed during the launch was the handling of dual-stack networks, where both IPv4 and IPv6 operate simultaneously.
