The test requires the participant to sort cards according to a changing rule (color, form, or number) that is not explicitly stated; the examiner only indicates whether each placement is correct or incorrect. The rule changes after a fixed number of correct responses, forcing the participant to shift strategy. Standard scoring metrics include categories completed, perseverative errors, and failure to maintain set. The test is typically administered individually and takes about 15–30 minutes.
