Web analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis, and reporting of web usage data to understand and optimize web usage. It encompasses both the technical processes of tracking user interactions on websites and the business practices of interpreting those data to improve user experience, conversion rates, and overall digital strategy.1
Web analytics relies on two primary data collection methods: log-file analysis and page-tagging (JavaScript-based). Beyond mainstream metrics, web analytics includes niche areas such as clickstream analysis, which examines the sequence of clicks a user makes, and heatmap analysis, which visualizes mouse movement and scrolling. The field has a dark side: 'dark analytics' refers to data that is not captured due to JavaScript errors, ad blockers, or users who disable cookies, leading to undercounts. The concept of 'data quality' is critical, as inaccurate tracking can lead to flawed business decisions. Historically, the first web analytics tool was a simple Perl script called 'getstats' written by Roy Fielding in 1993. The term 'web analytics' was popularized by the Web Analytics Association in 2003. In academia, the field is studied under 'web science' and 'human-computer interaction.'
