Wally Feurzeig (1927–2013) was an American computer scientist and educator, best known as a co-creator of the Logo programming language, which introduced children to programming through turtle graphics and procedural thinking.
Wally Feurzeig was born in Chicago in 1927. He studied mathematics and philosophy at the University of Chicago, where he developed an interest in the intersection of computation and education. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he worked at Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN) in the 1960s, a research firm known for pioneering work in computer networking and artificial intelligence. At BBN, Feurzeig collaborated with Seymour Papert, a mathematician and educator who had worked with Jean Piaget. Their shared vision of using computers as tools for active learning led to the creation of Logo.
In 1967, Feurzeig and Papert, along with Daniel Bobrow and Cynthia Solomon, designed Logo as a dialect of Lisp, tailored for educational use. The language's most iconic feature, turtle graphics, allowed children to control a cursor (or a physical robot) to draw shapes, thereby learning geometry and programming concepts through direct manipulation. Feurzeig was instrumental in implementing the first Logo systems and in developing the curriculum that accompanied them. Logo became widely adopted in schools during the 1980s, influencing later educational languages like Scratch. Feurzeig continued to refine Logo throughout his career, emphasizing its role in fostering mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Beyond Logo, Feurzeig was a pioneer in computer-assisted instruction (CAI). He led projects that used computers to teach mathematics and science, and he was an early advocate for the use of computers as 'intellectual amplifiers' rather than mere tutors. His work at BBN and later at the University of Illinois at Chicago explored how interactive environments could support collaborative learning. Feurzeig also contributed to the development of the 'Microworlds' concept, where learners explore a simulated environment to discover principles. His research influenced the design of many modern educational technologies, including interactive simulations and game-based learning.
Feurzeig was also a skilled musician and incorporated music into his educational software, believing that rhythm and melody could enhance learning. He was a founding member of the 'Logo Foundation' and helped organize the first Logo conferences. He authored several papers on the philosophy of programming languages, arguing that programming is a form of expression. Feurzeig's work extended to adult education, where he applied Logo principles to teach programming to non-specialists. He was known for his wit and his insistence on rigorous testing of educational software. Despite his contributions, he remained less publicly known than Papert, but his technical expertise was crucial to Logo's success.
