Volcano! (band)

Volcano! was formed in Chicago in 2005 by guitarist/vocalist Aaron With, bassist Sam Wissler, and drummer Mark Cartwright. The trio quickly gained attention in the local DIY scene for their intense, genre-defying performances. Their debut album, Beautiful Seizure, was released in 2007 on Leaf Label, receiving critical acclaim for its raw energy and inventive arrangements.¹

The band's second album, Piñata, followed in 2010, showcasing a more refined yet still adventurous sound. They toured extensively across the US and Europe, sharing stages with acts like Battles and Deerhoof. In 2013, they released their third album, Locus, which incorporated more electronic elements and featured guest contributions from members of Tortoise and The Sea and Cake.²

Volcano!'s music is characterized by abrupt tempo changes, odd time signatures, and a fusion of distorted guitars, driving basslines, and intricate drumming. Their sound draws from post-hardcore, noise rock, and avant-garde jazz, with critics often comparing them to bands like Shellac and Don Caballero. The band has cited influences ranging from minimalist composers like Steve Reich to experimental hip-hop producers.

Their live performances are noted for their improvisational segments, where the band members engage in spontaneous interplay, creating a unique experience at each show. This emphasis on live experimentation has earned them a dedicated following within the underground music community.

In addition to their studio albums, Volcano! has released several singles and splits, including a collaboration with the band Laddio Bolocko on a 7-inch record in 2008.³

Despite their relatively small discography, Volcano! has been involved in various side projects and collaborations. Aaron With is also a member of the electronic duo Beautify, and Sam Wissler has played with the band Radon. The band's name is often stylized with an exclamation mark, but they have occasionally performed under the moniker "Volcano! I'm Still Excited!!" for special events.⁴

Their song "The Island" from Beautiful Seizure was featured in the soundtrack of the independent film Mutual Friends (2013), bringing their music to a wider audience. Additionally, the band has been known to incorporate visual art into their live shows, collaborating with Chicago-based artists to create immersive multimedia experiences.
