Victoria Land is a region of Antarctica bordering the Ross Sea and Wilkes Land, extending from Cape Adare in the north to the Ross Ice Shelf in the south. It is a highland area of the Transantarctic Mountains, characterized by deep glacial valleys, exposed rock outcrops, and the McMurdo Dry Valleys, one of the driest places on Earth. The region is a focal point for scientific research, hosting the U.S. McMurdo Station and New Zealand's Scott Base, and has been a site of major geological and paleontological discoveries.
Victoria Land occupies the western side of the Ross Sea, stretching from Cape Adare at the northern tip to the Ross Ice Shelf in the south, and inland to the polar plateau. It is bounded to the west by Wilkes Land and to the east by the Ross Sea and the Ross Ice Shelf. The region is dominated by the Transantarctic Mountains, which rise to over 4,000 meters, with peaks such as Mount Kirkpatrick and Mount Lister. The terrain includes the McMurdo Dry Valleys, a series of ice-free valleys that are among the most extreme desert environments on Earth, with hyper-arid conditions and temperatures that rarely exceed freezing. The coastline is marked by deep embayments, including McMurdo Sound, and the Ross Ice Shelf, the largest ice shelf in Antarctica, which fronts the southern part of the region.
Victoria Land was first sighted in 1841 by the British explorer James Clark Ross, who named it after Queen Victoria. Ross's expedition mapped the coastline and discovered the Ross Ice Shelf and Mount Erebus, an active volcano. Later expeditions, including Robert Falcon Scott's Discovery Expedition (1901–1904) and Terra Nova Expedition (1910–1913), used the region as a base for attempts on the South Pole. The McMurdo Dry Valleys were first explored by Scott's team, who found them surprisingly ice-free. In the early 20th century, the region also saw the first flights over Antarctica, including Richard E. Byrd's flights from the Ross Ice Shelf. The establishment of permanent research stations, such as McMurdo Station (1956) and Scott Base (1957), during the International Geophysical Year, marked the beginning of continuous scientific occupation.
The geology of Victoria Land reveals a deep history, including some of the oldest rocks in Antarctica, dating back over 3 billion years. The Transantarctic Mountains are a rift shoulder, uplifted along the West Antarctic Rift System, and expose a sequence of sedimentary rocks that record the break-up of the supercontinent Gondwana. The Beacon Supergroup, a sequence of Devonian to Triassic sandstones and coal measures, contains fossils of Glossopteris, a seed fern, and the remains of early reptiles and amphibians. In 1991, a dinosaur fossil, Cryolophosaurus ellioti, was discovered on Mount Kirkpatrick, the first carnivorous dinosaur found in Antarctica. The Dry Valleys also contain glacial deposits and lake sediments that provide a record of past climate changes, including evidence of the expansion and retreat of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet.
Victoria Land hosts several unusual features that are less widely known. The McMurdo Dry Valleys contain the Onyx River, the longest river in Antarctica, which flows only during the brief summer melt. The region also has the Blood Falls, a subglacial outflow of iron-rich brine that stains the ice red, first studied in the 1960s. The Dry Valleys are home to endolithic microbial communities that survive within porous rocks, and the region's soils are among the most Mars-like on Earth, making it a testbed for astrobiology. The area also includes the Allan Hills, where numerous meteorites have been collected, including some of lunar and Martian origin. Additionally, the region has a history of human impact, including the abandoned huts of early explorers, which are now protected as historic sites.
