Design and construction

The observatory's design is optimized for a wide-field survey. The primary mirror is 8.4 meters in diameter, but the effective aperture is 6.7 meters due to the tertiary mirror's configuration, yielding a field of view of 9.6 square degrees—about 40 times the area of the full Moon. The camera, called the Legacy Survey of Space and Time Camera (LSSTCam), is the largest digital camera ever built for astronomy, with 189 sensors totaling 3.2 gigapixels. Construction began in 2015 on Cerro Pachón, a 2,682-meter peak in northern Chile, and the observatory is a joint project of the U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy, with significant contributions from international partners.

Science goals

The primary mission is the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), a 10-year survey that will image the entire southern sky every few nights, producing a time-lapse movie of the universe. The survey is expected to catalog billions of galaxies and detect tens of billions of stars, enabling studies of dark energy and dark matter through weak lensing and galaxy clustering.1 It will also discover and track near-Earth objects and other small solar system bodies, potentially identifying thousands of new asteroids and comets.2 The data will be made publicly available, with alerts issued within 60 seconds of detection for transient events such as supernovae and gravitational-wave counterparts.3

Naming and legacy

The observatory was renamed in 2019 to honor Vera Rubin, an American astronomer whose work on galaxy rotation curves provided strong evidence for dark matter.4 The renaming was a departure from the original name, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), reflecting a broader effort to recognize the contributions of women in science. Rubin's daughter, Judith Young, was present at the renaming ceremony.5 The observatory is expected to begin full science operations in 2025, after a period of commissioning and engineering tests.

Lesser-known aspects

Beyond its headline goals, the observatory will produce a vast archive of data that will be used for unexpected discoveries, such as the detection of interstellar objects like 'Oumuamua and the study of variable stars. The camera's focal plane is cooled to -100°C to reduce noise, and the telescope's mount is designed to slew rapidly to catch transient events.
