Tyler Carter

Tyler Carter began his recorded career in the post-hardcore scene before joining Woe, Is Me, an Atlanta-area band associated with the early-2010s metalcore and electronicore movement. He contributed vocals to the group’s second studio album, Genesi[s], released in 2012, although his tenure ended during the band’s lineup changes that year.

Carter’s role in Woe, Is Me established the vocal contrast that became central to his later work: melodic, pop-oriented singing set against screamed vocals, breakdowns, and heavily processed electronic production. The approach connected him to a scene in which bands increasingly blended post-hardcore performance conventions with polished contemporary production.

Issues made Tyler Carter widely known by pairing metalcore instrumentation with pop, R&B, hip-hop, and electronic elements. Carter formed the band with guitarist AJ Rebollo, drummer Case Snedecor, and bassist Skyler Acord after his departure from Woe, Is Me; the group’s self-titled debut album appeared in 2014 through Rise Records.

The band’s music gave Carter room to shift between clean lead vocals, falsetto, rhythmic phrasing, and harsher passages. Headspace followed in 2016, and Beautiful Oblivion arrived in 2019. The latter was Carter’s final studio album with Issues; the band announced his departure in December 2019 after allegations of sexual misconduct became public.¹

Tyler Carter’s solo recordings place his melodic and R&B-influenced singing at the center rather than treating it as one element of a heavy-band arrangement. His Leave Your Love EP was released in 2015, followed by the full-length album Moonshine in 2019.²

His solo catalogue draws on pop, soul, electronic music, and alternative rock while retaining the vocal ornamentation associated with his work in post-hardcore. Carter also appeared as a guest vocalist on recordings by other heavy-music acts, helping illustrate the growing overlap between the Warped Tour-era heavy scene and mainstream pop production.

Carter’s importance to the modern post-hardcore scene lies partly in his role as a stylistic bridge: he brought vocal techniques associated with contemporary R&B into a band format built around breakdowns and screamed passages. That combination influenced how many listeners and later performers understood the possibilities of a “clean” vocalist in metalcore.

His career also reflects the instability of the era’s touring-band economy. Woe, Is Me underwent major personnel changes before ending, while Issues continued through multiple lineup shifts and eventually separated from its original frontman. The allegations surrounding Carter’s departure became part of a wider reckoning over conduct and accountability in touring music communities; Carter denied some allegations and apologized for aspects of his behavior, while Issues ended its professional relationship with him.¹

Tyler Carter is chiefly remembered for helping define Issues’ hybrid sound and for making highly melodic, R&B-influenced vocals prominent within a commercially successful metalcore context. His work remains relevant to discussions of the 2010s post-hardcore crossover, even as assessments of his career also account for the misconduct allegations and the consequences that followed.
