Todd Pletcher

Todd Pletcher was born in Dallas, Texas, and grew up in a family involved in horse racing. His father, Jake Pletcher, was a trainer and jockey agent, which gave Todd early exposure to the sport. He attended the University of Arizona's Race Track Industry Program, a leading academic program for the racing industry, before beginning his career as an assistant to Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas.¹ Under Lukas, Pletcher learned the rigors of managing a large public stable, a model he would later adapt and expand. He launched his own training operation in 1996, initially with a modest string of horses, and quickly established a reputation for meticulous preparation and a patient approach with young horses.

Pletcher's breakthrough came in the early 2000s when he began winning major stakes races with regularity. In 2004, he won his first Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer, a feat he repeated in 2005, and he has been a perennial contender for the title since.² His first Triple Crown victory came in 2007 when Rags to Riches won the Belmont Stakes, becoming the first filly to win that race in over a century. He later won the Kentucky Derby with Super Saver (2010), Always Dreaming (2017), and Mystik Dan (2024), and the Belmont Stakes again with Palace Malice (2013). In 2015, he captured the Breeders' Cup Classic with Liam's Map, cementing his status as a trainer capable of winning at the highest level on any surface.

Pletcher is known for running a large, multi-divisional stable that operates year-round at major tracks across the country. He often has over 200 horses in training, divided among several barns, each overseen by trusted assistants.³ His approach emphasizes a slow, steady education for young horses, often giving them time to mature rather than pushing them too early. He is also a pioneer in the use of data and technology, employing a team that tracks workouts, pedigrees, and race results to inform training decisions. This systematic method has produced a remarkable consistency, with earnings exceeding $400 million, making him one of the most successful trainers in the sport's history.

Beyond his Triple Crown and Breeders' Cup wins, Pletcher has trained several notable champions that are less widely known. He conditioned Ashado, the 2004 Eclipse Champion 3-Year-Old Filly, and English Channel, a two-time Eclipse Award winner for turf male.⁴ He also trained the remarkable mare Beholder's rival, Princess of Sylmar, who won the 2013 Breeders' Cup Distaff. Pletcher has a reputation for excelling with fillies, and his record in the Kentucky Oaks is particularly strong, with four wins. He is also known for his success in the Saratoga meet, where he has won the training title multiple times, a feat that requires a deep bench of horses. In 2024, he became the first trainer to win the Kentucky Derby with a horse (Mystik Dan) that he had also trained as a yearling, a rare accomplishment.
