Tharsis is an extinct genus of pachycormid fish from the Late Jurassic, known from fossils found in the Solnhofen Limestone of Germany. It is notable for its small size, slender body, and the presence of a sturgeon-like heterocercal tail, which distinguishes it from many other pachycormids.
Tharsis belongs to the family Pachycormidae, a group of Mesozoic ray-finned fishes that includes both tuna-like predators and filter-feeders. The genus was erected by the Swiss paleontologist Louis Agassiz in the 19th century, based on material from the Solnhofen limestones. Its precise phylogenetic position has been debated; some analyses place it close to the base of the pachycormid tree, while others suggest a more derived position among the suspension-feeding forms.1 The type species is Tharsis dubius, which was originally described under a different name before being reassigned.
Tharsis was a small fish, typically reaching about 10 cm in length, with an elongated, fusiform body. Its most distinctive feature is the heterocercal tail, where the upper lobe is longer than the lower, a trait more common in primitive actinopterygians than in most pachycormids. The fins are relatively delicate, and the skull shows a combination of primitive and derived characters, including a reduced squamosal bone and a well-ossified braincase. The teeth are small and conical, suggesting a diet of small invertebrates or plankton.
Tharsis inhabited the warm, shallow seas of the Late Jurassic European archipelago. The Solnhofen Limestone, where its fossils are found, is a Konservat-Lagerstätte that preserves fine details such as soft tissues and stomach contents. Specimens of Tharsis are rare compared to other fishes like Leptolepides, but they show exceptional preservation, sometimes including traces of the digestive tract. The presence of Tharsis in these deposits suggests it was a pelagic or semi-pelagic swimmer, possibly schooling, as multiple individuals have been found in close association.2
One of the most intriguing aspects of Tharsis is its historical significance: it was among the first fossil fishes from Solnhofen to be scientifically illustrated, appearing in Agassiz's monumental Recherches sur les Poissons Fossiles. Additionally, Tharsis has been cited in discussions of pachycormid evolution as a possible transitional form between the primitive, heterocercal condition and the more derived, homocercal tails seen in later members. Some researchers have also noted that Tharsis may have been sexually dimorphic, with differences in fin shape between presumed males and females, though this remains speculative.
