The technological singularity is a hypothetical future point at which technological growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible, resulting in unforeseeable changes to human civilization.1 The concept is most often associated with the idea that an artificial intelligence could surpass human intelligence and then recursively improve itself, leading to an intelligence explosion that would radically transform society.2 The term was popularized by science fiction writer Vernor Vinge in a 1993 essay, though the underlying idea has earlier roots in the work of mathematician I. J. Good and others.3

Concept and definitions

The technological singularity is defined as a point where technological progress becomes so rapid that it outstrips human ability to predict or control it. The most common formulation involves an artificial intelligence that can improve its own capabilities, leading to a runaway feedback loop of intelligence growth. This 'intelligence explosion' was first articulated by mathematician I. J. Good in 1965, who speculated that a machine smarter than any human could design even smarter machines, leading to a sudden and dramatic acceleration in technological capability.2

Vernor Vinge, in his 1993 essay 'The Coming Technological Singularity,' argued that within thirty years humanity would have the technological means to create superhuman intelligence, and that this event would mark the end of the human era. He emphasized that the singularity is not merely a matter of faster progress but a fundamental break in the continuity of human history, making it impossible to predict what comes after.3

Proponents and predictions

Futurist Ray Kurzweil has been the most prominent advocate of the singularity, predicting in his 2005 book The Singularity Is Near that it will occur around 2045. He bases his forecast on Moore's law and the exponential growth of computing power, arguing that the convergence of artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and biotechnology will lead to a merging of human and machine intelligence.4 Kurzweil's vision includes the uploading of human minds to computers and the achievement of radical life extension.

Other proponents, such as philosopher Nick Bostrom, have focused on the risks associated with a superintelligent AI. Bostrom's 2014 book Superintelligence argues that a superintelligent AI could pose an existential threat to humanity if its goals are not aligned with ours, a problem now known as the 'alignment problem.'5 This has spurred research into AI safety and value alignment.

Criticisms and alternative views

Critics of the singularity concept argue that it is based on unfounded extrapolations of exponential growth and that human intelligence is not a simple scalar quantity that can be surpassed in a linear fashion. Computer scientist Paul Allen and others have pointed out that the complexity of the brain and the difficulty of reverse-engineering it may make the singularity far more distant or even impossible. Some researchers, like Rodney Brooks, have argued that technological progress is often slower than predicted and that the singularity is a myth.

Economist Robin Hanson has proposed a more moderate version, suggesting that an intelligence explosion might lead to a 'singularity' in economic growth but not necessarily a radical break in human history. Others, such as philosopher Hubert Dreyfus, have argued that computers will never fully replicate human understanding because of the embodied nature of intelligence.6

Lesser-known aspects

The term 'singularity' was borrowed from physics, where it refers to a point of infinite density such as a black hole, but its use in a technological context dates to the 1950s. Mathematician Stanislaw Ulam, in a 1958 obituary for John von Neumann, mentioned von Neumann's discussion of the 'ever accelerating progress of technology and changes in the mode of human life, which gives the appearance of approaching some essential singularity in the history of the race.'7

In 2000, AI researcher Eliezer Yudkowsky founded the Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI) specifically to address the risks of a singularity, and the concept has also influenced science fiction, such as the 'Singularity' in the Terminator franchise and the 'Culture' series by Iain M. Banks. A less-known aspect is the 'singularitarian' movement, a subculture that advocates for the safe development of superintelligence and sometimes promotes mind uploading as a path to immortality.8
