The sunflower sea star (Pycnopodia helianthoides) is a large sea star species native to the northeast Pacific Ocean, from Alaska to Baja California. It is one of the largest sea stars in the world, with a maximum arm span of about one meter and up to 24 arms. Once abundant in kelp forests and rocky subtidal zones, the species has suffered catastrophic population declines since 2013 due to sea star wasting disease, leading to its listing as Critically Endangered by the IUCN.
The sunflower sea star is distinguished by its numerous arms (typically 15–24) and a soft, fleshy appearance, with colors ranging from orange to purple. It is a fast-moving predator, capable of speeds up to 40 cm per minute, and feeds on sea urchins, clams, snails, and other invertebrates. Its feeding habits are ecologically significant: by preying on purple sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus), it helps maintain healthy kelp forests. The species reproduces by spawning, with females releasing millions of eggs into the water column.
Beginning in 2013, an outbreak of sea star wasting disease (SSWD) devastated sunflower sea star populations along the Pacific coast. The disease, associated with a densovirus, causes lesions, limb loss, and rapid tissue disintegration. In some areas, populations declined by over 90%, and the species is now considered functionally extinct in parts of its range, such as central California. The loss of this predator has been linked to increases in sea urchin populations and subsequent declines in kelp forest cover.
In response to the dramatic decline, conservation initiatives have been launched, including captive breeding programs at institutions like the California Academy of Sciences and the University of Washington. Researchers are also studying the species' genetic diversity and disease resistance to inform reintroduction strategies. In 2020, the IUCN Red List classified the sunflower sea star as Critically Endangered, and in 2021, the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service was petitioned to list it under the Endangered Species Act.
Beyond its ecological role, the sunflower sea star has several lesser-known traits. It can regenerate lost arms, and in some cases, a severed arm can grow into a new individual. The species has a remarkable ability to detect prey through chemical cues, and its tube feet are used for both locomotion and respiration. Historically, it was harvested for use as fertilizer and livestock feed, though this practice has declined. Additionally, the species is notable for its long lifespan, potentially exceeding 20 years in the wild.
