Games
Strategy games are games in which players make decisions that shape competing objectives, usually by allocating limited resources, positioning forces, planning sequences of actions, or anticipating opponents. The category spans abstract board games, military simulations, economic games, and digital forms such as turn-based strategy and real-time strategy. Although rules and settings vary widely, strategic play generally rewards analysis, adaptation, and long-term judgment rather than speed or chance alone.
Strategy games center on consequential choices made under constraints. Players may control armies, civilizations, companies, territories, or abstract pieces, while the rules determine what information, actions, and resources are available. The central challenge is not simply completing a task but selecting a plan whose benefits outweigh its costs over several decisions. 1
Traditional forms include abstract strategy games such as chess and Go, whose rules minimize narrative and simulation; war games, which model conflict; and economic or political games, which emphasize negotiation, production, and logistics. Digital strategy games commonly divide into turn-based formats, in which players act in discrete phases, and real-time strategy, in which decisions occur continuously. 4X games add exploration, expansion, exploitation, and extermination to a broader empire-building structure.
Strategy-game design developed from older traditions of board play, military thought, and mathematical problem solving. Chess evolved from earlier Indian and Persian games and became a widely studied model of positional planning, while Go developed in China as a territory-building game with a substantially larger strategic search space. 23
Modern war games made military decision-making playable through maps, units, movement rules, and scenarios; some were designed for recreation, while others were used for education or professional analysis. Kriegsspiel, a nineteenth-century Prussian military exercise, helped establish the idea that rule-based simulation could examine command decisions without reproducing an actual battle. 4 Good designs balance meaningful choice with legible rules, so that outcomes can be attributed to decisions rather than arbitrary complexity.
Digital games broaden strategy by automating calculations, simulating complex worlds, and allowing many opponents to act through networks. A turn-based game can support detailed planning, diplomacy, and historical modeling; a real-time strategy game adds production timing, unit control, scouting, and pressure from simultaneous action. Computer opponents may follow scripted priorities, search a decision tree, or adapt through machine-learning techniques.
Digital strategy also includes city-builders, grand-strategy games, tactical games, tower-defense games, and multiplayer online battle arenas, although genre boundaries are disputed. Competitive play often separates macro decisions—economy, technology, and territory—from micro decisions such as individual unit control. Research on games has examined how complex environments can support systems thinking, problem solving, and learning, while also stressing that benefits depend on the game's design and the player's context. 5
Strategy games are not always contests of complete information or direct combat. In hidden-information games, players infer an opponent's position or intentions; in diplomacy-centered games, negotiation and temporary alliances may matter more than tactical strength. Some designs are cooperative, requiring players to coordinate against an automated system, while others are asymmetric, giving different sides unequal powers and objectives.
Chance does not automatically remove strategy: dice, shuffled cards, or uncertain combat can make risk management and contingency planning part of the skill. Conversely, a game with no random elements can still be strategically shallow if its choices are dominated by one obvious move. Serious and educational applications use simplified war-game structures to study logistics, crisis response, and organizational decisions, but simulated results should not be treated as predictions of real events. Strategy games therefore form a design spectrum rather than a single mechanical category.
Genre boundaries are conventional: individual games may combine strategic, tactical, simulation, role-playing, or management systems.
