Origins and early development

The first recorded working steamboat was the Palmipède, built by French inventor Claude-François-Dorothée de Jouffroy d'Abbans in 1776 and tested on the Doubs River in 1783.2 Early experiments also included those by John Fitch in the United States, who demonstrated a steamboat on the Delaware River in 1787, and by Patrick Miller's and William Symington's Charlotte Dundas in 1802 on the Clyde Canal. These pioneering vessels, though successful, were largely sidelined by more enterprising promoters. Golden age on the Mississippi and beyond

Steamboats reached their zenith on the Mississippi River system in the mid-19th century, becoming the archetypal image of the American riverboat. By 1850, over 1,000 steamboats operated on the Mississippi and its tributaries.3 These vessels carried passengers, freight, and mail, linking New Orleans to St. Louis and points north, profoundly shaping the economy of the American South and Midwest. Innovations included the 'walking beam' engine for side-wheelers and the 'steeple compound' for stern-wheelers. The most iconic design was the American paddle-wheel riverboat, with its ornate tiers of decks, calliope music, and grand saloons. In Europe, steamboats were more utilitarian, serving as ferries on the Rhine, Danube, and Volga. By the late 19th century, steel hulls and compound engines increased efficiency, but the steamboat's role declined as railroads offered faster, year-round transport. Beyond the Mississippi, steamboats saw niche applications: on the shallow Zambezi River, the Ma Robert, built by missionary David Livingstone, was used for exploration; in Russia, the paddle-steamer Sovetskaya Rossiya navigated Arctic rivers. The early steamboat Pyroscaphe of 1783 had a double-hulled design and a steam engine that drove two side wheels. Some steamboats served as gunboats, such as the USS Cairo during the American Civil War. A curious detail: the largest steamboat ever built was the SS Great Eastern, though it was a ship, not a boat. In India, steamboats were called 'puffers' and used on the Ganges.
