Spotted knapweed (Centaurea stoebe) is an invasive perennial plant species native to Europe and Asia. It forms dense, long-lived populations in disturbed grasslands, roadsides, pastures, and open forests, where it can displace native vegetation and reduce forage quality.1
Spotted knapweed is a taprooted perennial forb that commonly grows about 0.3–1.2 metres tall and produces one or more branched stems. Its deeply divided lower leaves contrast with the narrower upper leaves, while pink to purple flower heads sit in urn-shaped bracts marked by dark, triangular tips—the spots that give the plant its common name.1
Flowering generally occurs from early summer into autumn, depending on climate and elevation. Each head produces numerous small, hairy seeds, and the plant can also regenerate from its crown or root fragments. Older North American literature frequently used Centaurea maculosa, whereas many modern floras place the principal invasive form under C. stoebe subsp. micranthos; this synonymy can make older distribution and control records difficult to compare.1
The plant is not restricted to dry prairie: it occurs across a broad habitat range, including forest openings, mountain valleys, coastal sites, and disturbed urban land. Its seed heads can persist as conspicuous winter structures, and detached stems may contribute to short-distance dispersal after maturity. Control decisions also have an edge case: dense infestations may provide some temporary cover for soil, yet their low forage value and effects on native diversity generally make long-term replacement with a stable, diverse plant community the preferred objective.23
