SomaFM

SomaFM was launched in February 2000 by Rusty Hodge, a former public radio producer and web developer, as a personal experiment in streaming music from his San Francisco apartment.¹ The name derives from the fictional drug soma in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, reflecting the station's aim to provide a soothing, mind-expanding listening experience.² Early channels like Groove Salad and Secret Agent quickly gained cult followings, and the station grew through word of mouth and early internet radio directories. Hodge's technical background allowed him to build custom streaming solutions, and SomaFM became one of the first stations to offer multiple genre-specific streams simultaneously. Over the years, it has survived industry shifts, including the 2007 royalty rate crisis that threatened many webcasters, by mobilizing listeners to lobby the Copyright Royalty Board.³

SomaFM's programming is characterized by hand-curated, genre-specific channels that are continuously updated by volunteer DJs and music directors. Notable channels include Groove Salad (ambient/downtempo), Secret Agent (lounge and spy-movie music), and Indie Pop Rocks (independent rock). The station also features niche channels like Drone Zone (ambient drone), Fluid (instrumental hip-hop), and DEF CON Radio, which broadcasts during the annual hacking conference.⁴ Each channel is designed to maintain a consistent mood, and many have become reference points for fans of electronic and ambient music. SomaFM also produces original shows and special broadcasts, such as the annual Christmas music channel and the Halloween-themed channel. The station's playlists are meticulously crafted, often including obscure tracks that are not available on mainstream platforms, making it a valuable resource for music discovery.

SomaFM has been a pioneer in internet radio technology, adopting new streaming formats early and offering multiple bitrates, including high-quality AAC and MP3 streams. It was among the first to provide a public API for stream metadata, enabling third-party apps and hardware integrations. The station supports a wide range of devices, from smartphones and smart speakers to car audio systems, and offers a mobile app for iOS and Android. SomaFM also pioneered the use of "smart" playlists that adapt to listener preferences, though it maintains a human-curated approach. In 2019, SomaFM launched a dedicated app for the Apple TV, and it has been integrated into platforms like Roku and Sonos. The station's infrastructure is designed for reliability, with redundant servers and a global content delivery network to ensure uninterrupted streaming.

Beyond its mainstream channels, SomaFM has a rich history of niche experiments and community engagement. One of its earliest channels, "ThistleRadio," was a Celtic music stream that later became an independent station. SomaFM also operates a low-power FM station, KFOG, in San Francisco, which broadcasts a subset of its programming over the air. The station has a tradition of April Fools' Day pranks, such as temporarily renaming channels or playing unexpected genres. It also hosts a "Listener Appreciation" event each year, where listeners can request songs and interact with DJs. SomaFM's founder, Rusty Hodge, has been an advocate for net neutrality and internet radio rights, testifying before the U.S. Congress on multiple occasions.⁵ The station's archives include rare live recordings and interviews with artists, some of which are not available elsewhere. Additionally, SomaFM has collaborated with the Electronic Frontier Foundation to promote digital rights, and it has been featured in academic studies on internet radio and music curation.
