Software Arts was an American software company founded in 1979 by Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston to develop VisiCalc, the pioneering spreadsheet program for personal computers.1 Although the company itself had a relatively short commercial life, its software helped turn the microcomputer from a hobbyist device into a practical tool for accounting, planning, and business analysis.
Software Arts was established in 1979 to create practical software for the emerging personal-computer market. Dan Bricklin conceived the spreadsheet model after imagining an electronic form whose values and formulas could be recalculated automatically; Bob Frankston supplied much of the programming expertise needed to make that concept usable on limited hardware.1
The company’s defining project was VisiCalc, developed for the Apple II. Its grid of rows and columns allowed users to enter labels, numbers, and formulas, then see dependent results change when an input changed. This reduced the need to rewrite paper calculations and made the computer valuable to people who were not programmers. VisiCalc made the personal computer a credible business instrument by automating repetitive financial and numerical work. Personal Software marketed VisiCalc to customers, while Software Arts retained a central role in its creation and licensing. As the market expanded, disagreements over contracts, royalties, ownership, and successor products contributed to litigation and weakened the partnership.2
Software Arts also faced a rapidly changing industry. The IBM PC and its compatible systems broadened the market, while competitors delivered faster or more capable spreadsheets. VisiCalc remained historically important but lost market leadership to newer programs, particularly Lotus 1-2-3. The company’s decline illustrates a recurring pattern in software history: inventing a foundational product does not guarantee control of the platform, distribution network, or next generation of users.3
Software Arts’ most enduring contribution was a way of thinking about software, not merely a single commercial program. VisiCalc popularized the idea that a computer could serve as a manipulable model of a business or household, allowing users to experiment with assumptions rather than simply record finished answers. That interaction helped shape later spreadsheet conventions, including cell references, formula recalculation, and the separation of data from presentation.1
A lesser-known feature of the company’s story is the importance of constraints. VisiCalc had to operate within the Apple II’s modest memory and display capabilities, so its designers emphasized compact data structures and a focused interface. The program’s apparent simplicity was therefore partly an engineering response to hardware limits. Bricklin and Frankston later became recognized contributors to personal-computing history, while Software Arts itself became a comparatively obscure name behind one of the era’s best-known software products.4
