Slayers (Japanese: スレイヤーズ, Hepburn: Sureiyāzu) is a Japanese fantasy light novel series written by Hajime Kanzaka and illustrated by Rui Araizumi. It follows the misadventures of Lina Inverse, a teenage sorceress who, along with her companions, encounters demons, dragons, and political intrigue in a medieval-inspired world. The series has been adapted into manga, anime, and other media, and is known for its blend of comedy, action, and parody of fantasy tropes.
The story is set in a world where magic is a practical science, and the primary antagonist is the demon lord Shabranigdo, whose resurrection threatens the world. Lina Inverse, a prodigious sorceress, begins as a bandit-hunting adventurer but soon becomes embroiled in larger conflicts. She is joined by the swordsman Gourry Gabriev, the priest Zelgadis, the warrior Amelia, and the shapeshifter Sylphiel, among others.
The series balances epic battles with comedic interludes, often parodying the conventions of high fantasy. The magic system includes spells like the Dragon Slave, which Lina famously uses to devastating effect, sometimes with unintended consequences.
The light novels were adapted into three anime television series in the 1990s: Slayers (1995), Slayers Next (1996), and Slayers Try (1997). A fourth season, Slayers Revolution, aired in 2008, followed by Slayers Evolution-R in 2009. The anime is known for its fast-paced humor and memorable voice acting.
In addition to the TV series, there are five original video animations (OVAs), five animated films, and a variety of manga adaptations. The franchise also spawned audio dramas, video games, and a series of short stories. The anime was licensed in North America by Central Park Media and later by Funimation, contributing to its popularity in the West.
Slayers is considered a classic of 1990s anime and a pioneer of the isekai and fantasy-comedy genres. It has been praised for its witty dialogue, strong female protagonist, and clever subversion of fantasy clichés. The series has a dedicated fanbase and has influenced later works such as KonoSuba.
The light novels have sold millions of copies in Japan, and the anime has been broadcast in numerous countries. The character Lina Inverse is often cited as one of the most iconic anime heroines, and the series' theme songs, particularly "Get Along" by Megumi Hayashibara and Masami Okui, remain popular.
Beyond the main storyline, the Slayers franchise includes a series of spin-off novels focusing on Naga the Serpent, a rival sorceress, which were adapted into the OVAs and films. The world-building is deeper than it appears, with a complex cosmology involving the Lord of Nightmares and the four worlds.
The author Hajime Kanzaka has stated that the character of Lina was inspired by his own love of role-playing games, and the series' magic system is influenced by tabletop RPG mechanics. The anime's English dub, produced by Central Park Media, is noted for its liberal adaptation, adding jokes that were not in the original Japanese, which has been both criticized and praised by fans.
