Shipbreaking is the process of dismantling obsolete vessels for scrap metal and parts, a practice that supplies a significant portion of the world's steel and supports recycling economies. It is a hazardous and environmentally sensitive industry, concentrated in South Asia, where aging ships are beached and manually cut apart. The industry provides livelihoods for thousands of workers but has drawn international scrutiny for labor abuses and toxic pollution. Shipbreaking is also known as ship recycling, reflecting efforts to recover and reuse materials beyond just steel.
Shipbreaking began on a large scale after World War II, when surplus warships and merchant vessels were scrapped for steel. The industry shifted from developed nations to developing countries in the 1970s and 1980s, driven by lower labor costs and laxer environmental regulations. Today, the top destinations are the beaches of Chittagong in Bangladesh, Alang in India, and Gadani in Pakistan, which together handle the majority of global tonnage. Turkey's Aliaga yards also play a significant role, particularly for European ships. The global fleet's aging, combined with new environmental regulations, ensures a steady supply of vessels for recycling.
The dominant method in South Asia is beaching, where a ship is driven onto a tidal mudflat at high speed, then dismantled manually by workers using torches and cranes. This technique is efficient but dangerous, as workers face falls, explosions, and toxic fumes. In contrast, developed countries use dry-dock or pier-side methods, which are safer and more environmentally controlled but costlier. The Hong Kong Convention, adopted in 2009, aims to regulate ship recycling, but its ratification has been slow, and enforcement remains weak in many yards.1 Some yards have adopted improved practices, such as pre-cleaning and waste management, but the majority still lack basic safety measures.
Shipbreaking releases hazardous materials, including asbestos, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), lead, and oil, into coastal ecosystems, contaminating water and soil. Workers often suffer from respiratory diseases, injuries, and fatalities; the International Labour Organization has documented high accident rates.2 The industry also has a social dimension: it provides employment to thousands of unskilled workers, many of whom are migrants, and contributes to local economies. However, labor rights violations, including child labor and lack of protective equipment, are common. Environmental groups have called for stricter enforcement of the Basel Convention, which restricts transboundary movement of hazardous waste, but shipbreaking often exploits loopholes by labeling ships as 'ships for recycling' rather than waste.
Beyond the major yards, shipbreaking occurs in smaller facilities in countries like China and the Philippines, which often use less visible methods. The industry has a niche role in the circular economy: recovered steel is used in construction and rebar, and other materials like copper and brass are sold for reuse. A notable historical case is the scrapping of the SS United States, a luxury liner that was sold for recycling in 2024, highlighting the cultural significance of some vessels. Additionally, the practice of 'shipbreaking' has inspired art and literature, such as the documentary 'Shipbreakers' (2004) and the photography of Edward Burtynsky. The industry also faces a growing challenge from 'ghost ships'—vessels abandoned by owners to avoid recycling costs, which pose environmental hazards.
Shipbreaking remains a contentious industry, balancing economic benefits against human and environmental costs.
