The lac insect secretes it as a protective cocoon, and harvesters scrape the encrusted branches, then crush, wash, and heat the raw material to separate the resin from impurities. The molten resin is stretched into thin sheets, cooled, and broken into flakes, or formed into button-shaped discs. Solvent-based processing yields dewaxed, decolorized grades for fine finishes, while seedlac and garnet lac are less refined variants. The color ranges from pale lemon to dark orange, depending on the host tree and processing, with blonde shellac being the most bleached form.

In woodworking, shellac is prized as a fast-drying, non-toxic finish that imparts a warm, amber glow and can be built to a high polish. It is applied as a solution in denatured alcohol, often using a pad or brush, and dries within minutes, allowing multiple coats in a single session. French polishing, a technique that uses a padded cloth to apply thin layers, produces a mirror-like finish that was the standard for fine furniture in the 18th and 19th centuries. Shellac also serves as a sealer and primer, preventing bleed-through from knots and stains, and it adheres well to most surfaces.
