Seed bank

A seed bank is a facility or collection that stores viable seeds as a backup for conserving plant genetic diversity. By drying and cooling seeds under controlled conditions, it can preserve genetic material for research, restoration, crop breeding, and recovery of threatened species outside their natural habitats.

Purpose and basic operation

A seed bank preserves plant diversity by storing seeds under conditions that slow aging. Seeds are generally cleaned, dried to a safe moisture content, sealed in moisture-resistant packaging, and kept at low temperature; these steps reduce respiration, fungal growth, and biochemical deterioration.1 The stored material is usually divided into accessions, each linked to records describing its species, geographic origin, collection date, and handling history.

Seed banks complement, rather than replace, living conservation. They allow a species or crop variety to be maintained without occupying land and can provide material after local extinction, natural disaster, war, or disease. Collections also support taxonomic research, ecological restoration, and plant breeding. The approach is especially valuable for agricultural diversity, because older landraces may contain traits for drought tolerance, pest resistance, or adaptation to changing climates.

Storage is not indefinite. Viability must be tested periodically, and declining accessions are regenerated by growing plants and collecting fresh seed. Regeneration can unintentionally alter a sample through cross-pollination, selection, or an unrepresentative number of parent plants, so curators carefully control population size and growing conditions.

Types of seeds and conservation limits

The orthodox-seed method works best for seeds that tolerate drying and freezing. Many cereals, legumes, and numerous wild plants fall into this category, but recalcitrant seeds, including those of some oaks, tropical trees, and aquatic plants, are damaged by drying or cannot be stored conventionally.2 Such species may require field genebanks, living collections, cryopreservation of embryos or tissues, or specialized protocols.

Seed banks conserve genetic samples, not complete ecosystems. A stored accession cannot preserve pollinators, soil organisms, evolutionary interactions, or the continuing adaptation that occurs in wild populations. Sampling is therefore central: collections should represent geographic range, ecological variation, and locally important cultivated forms rather than repeatedly duplicating easily available material.

There is also a distinction between a genebank and a conservation vault. National and international genebanks actively distribute samples for research and breeding, whereas a backup vault is designed primarily to duplicate collections held elsewhere. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault, established in Norway, stores copies supplied by genebanks around the world and is intended as a security reserve, not as a routine seed-distribution center.3

Global infrastructure and access

Seed conservation operates through a network of national, university, crop-specific, and international institutions. The Millennium Seed Bank at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, focuses heavily on wild plant species, while the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research network maintains major crop collections used by breeders and researchers. Their work includes collecting, documenting, testing, regenerating, and distributing samples under legal and scientific rules.

Access and ownership are significant because seeds are biological resources linked to countries, communities, and farmers. The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture provides a multilateral framework for sharing many crop resources for research, breeding, and training, with provisions concerning facilitated access and benefit-sharing.4 The Nagoya Protocol supplies a broader access-and-benefit-sharing framework for genetic resources, although its application varies by jurisdiction and resource.

Digital records make collections more useful: passport data, viability results, photographs, genomic information, and germination protocols can help researchers identify suitable material without repeatedly collecting from the wild. Physical storage remains essential because a database cannot substitute for the biological sample itself.

Lesser-known aspects

Some seeds survive storage better after a deliberate drying process, but the safe moisture range differs among species. A seed that appears dormant may still be alive, while a poor germination result can reflect dormancy rather than loss of viability; testing may therefore require scarification, smoke chemicals, light, temperature cycles, or other ecological cues.

Seed banks also preserve cultural and historical information. Collections can include farmer-developed varieties, wild relatives of crops, and material gathered before habitat transformation, giving researchers a reference point for studying genetic change. In restoration, however, introducing stored seed is not automatically beneficial: poorly matched sources can reduce local adaptation or spread pathogens, so provenance, quarantine, and ecological suitability must be assessed.

Backups are valuable only when they are independent and recoverable. Power failures, freezer breakdowns, floods, civil unrest, inadequate funding, and undocumented transfers can all threaten a collection. For that reason, leading programs duplicate samples at separate sites, monitor viability, maintain detailed inventories, and periodically test whether stored material can actually be retrieved and grown.
