BYD Sealion identifies a group of mid-size crossover SUVs rather than one globally uniform vehicle. The fully electric Sealion 7 is the principal international model, while the Sealion 6 is a plug-in hybrid offered in markets including Australia and New Zealand. In Europe, a closely related plug-in-hybrid vehicle has generally been marketed as the BYD Seal U DM-i, illustrating how BYD’s regional naming is not consistent.1

The Sealion name extends BYD’s marine-themed naming strategy, which also includes the BYD Seal sedan and Dolphin hatchback. Despite the shared branding, the Sealion models are SUVs with higher seating positions, larger cargo areas, and distinct body structures. Exact equipment, power outputs, battery sizes, and driver-assistance features depend on market, trim, and model year.

Sealion 7: the battery-electric SUV

Sealion 7 is a battery-electric crossover positioned as a family-oriented performance SUV. It uses BYD’s Blade Battery technology and is built on the company’s e-Platform 3.0, an architecture designed for electric propulsion, integrated electronics, and high-voltage charging.

Depending on version, the vehicle has rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, with the latter using separate electric motors on the front and rear axles. BYD markets the model on cabin space, rapid charging, aerodynamic design, and strong acceleration rather than on off-road specialization. European specifications include a lithium-iron-phosphate battery chemistry, while range and charging figures are tested under regional procedures such as WLTP; those figures should not be directly compared with official results from other testing systems.

Sealion 6 and the plug-in-hybrid approach

Sealion 6 combines a petrol engine with rechargeable electric propulsion, making it a plug-in hybrid rather than a purely electric vehicle. Its drivetrain can draw energy from an external charger or from the engine and regenerative braking, allowing short trips to be completed electrically when the battery has sufficient charge.2

The model is related to BYD’s broader Super DM-i plug-in-hybrid system, which is designed to reduce fuel consumption through frequent electric operation while retaining the longer refuelling range of a combustion engine. Real-world economy depends heavily on charging frequency, temperature, speed, and trip length. A plug-in hybrid’s certified fuel figure can therefore be substantially lower than an owner’s result when the battery is seldom charged. The most easily overlooked fact about BYD Sealion is that its badge does not guarantee identical technical content across countries. The Sealion 6, Seal U DM-i, and related regional versions can differ in battery capacity, engine calibration, seating configuration, infotainment software, and warranty terms, even when their bodies appear closely related.1

Another distinction concerns safety assessment: ratings belong to a tested configuration and market, not automatically to every vehicle carrying the same name. Euro NCAP, for example, publishes results for specified variants and equipment levels.3 The Sealion program also reflects BYD’s international expansion: the company has used different model names and powertrain choices to fit local regulations, tax rules, charging infrastructure, and consumer preferences. Buyers therefore need the local specification sheet rather than a global brochure.
