Science and religion are distinct but overlapping ways of interpreting reality. Science relies on public evidence, measurement, and testable explanations, while religion commonly addresses ultimate meaning, value, purpose, and experiences of the sacred. Their relationship has included conflict, independence, dialogue, and cooperation rather than following one universal pattern.
Science and religion differ chiefly in method, authority, and the kinds of questions they are equipped to answer. Scientific inquiry forms hypotheses, gathers observations, and permits conclusions to be revised when evidence changes. Religion may draw on revelation, sacred texts, tradition, ritual, and personal or communal experience. The boundary is not absolute: religions can make claims about the natural world, and scientists can discuss ethical or philosophical implications, but empirical questions are especially suited to scientific testing.1
The phrase methodological naturalism describes the scientific practice of seeking natural causes without deciding that nature is all that exists. That restraint differs from metaphysical naturalism, the philosophical position that no supernatural reality exists. Confusing these positions can make scientific procedure appear to prove or disprove a broader worldview when it generally does neither.
Religious traditions are internally diverse. Some interpret creation narratives literally, others symbolically or theologically, and many distinguish claims about meaning from claims about physical mechanisms. The resulting relationship depends on particular doctrines, institutions, and historical settings.
The history of science and religion contains both cooperation and confrontation, so neither a permanent warfare model nor a harmony model is adequate. Medieval Christian, Muslim, and Jewish scholars preserved, criticized, and extended Greek natural philosophy, while religious institutions supported education, libraries, hospitals, and astronomical observation. Early modern science emerged from these settings even as new explanations challenged inherited authorities.
The trial of Galileo Galilei became the best-known example of conflict, but it involved biblical interpretation, ecclesiastical authority, politics, and disputes among natural philosophers as well as the status of heliocentrism.2 The episode is therefore historically more complicated than the popular image of science simply defeating religion.
In the nineteenth century, Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection intensified debate because it offered a natural account of biological diversity and challenged some literal readings of Genesis. Opposition and acceptance appeared within multiple religious traditions; contemporary religious responses range from rejection to theistic evolution and nonliteral creation theology.3
Modern disagreements usually concern particular claims rather than an inevitable clash between two institutions. Evolution, human origins, reproductive medicine, genetics, artificial intelligence, climate change, and end-of-life care can raise both empirical and ethical questions. Science can estimate consequences and test mechanisms, but decisions about justice, dignity, obligation, and acceptable risk also involve philosophy, law, and public values.
Evolutionary biology is a scientific framework supported by evidence from fossils, comparative anatomy, biogeography, and molecular genetics; it does not by itself settle whether a deity exists or whether life has ultimate purpose.3 This distinction underlies the position of major scientific bodies that religious belief and acceptance of evolution are not logically incompatible.
Public attitudes do not map neatly onto a science-versus-religion divide. Surveys find variation by country, denomination, education, and political identity, while many scientists retain religious commitments and many religious communities support scientific research.4 Disputes often reflect institutional trust and social identity as much as competing explanations of nature.
Lesser-known aspects include religiously motivated scientific work, non-Western intellectual traditions, and the importance of boundary cases. Georges Lemaître, a Belgian physicist and Catholic priest, proposed the expanding-universe model that became associated with the Big Bang; he resisted treating a physical cosmological theory as a proof of creation.5 His example complicates the assumption that modern cosmology was formed only by secular investigators.
Islamic scholars such as Ibn al-Haytham made influential contributions to optics and experimental reasoning, while Jewish, Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, and other traditions have supplied varied intellectual resources for thinking about nature. These histories should not be reduced to a single “religion” category.
Religious institutions also remain participants in research. The Vatican Observatory conducts and supports astronomical work, illustrating that institutional religious identity does not necessarily entail opposition to modern science.6 Conversely, religiously framed claims about nature remain scientific only when they produce testable evidence and withstand critical examination; theological significance alone cannot substitute for that standard.
Historical relationships between scientific inquiry and religious traditions vary substantially by period, region, denomination, and definition; broad claims about either “science” or “religion” should therefore be treated cautiously.
