Savanna (comedy duo)

Savanna was formed in 2007 when Wagrell and El Refai met while studying at a theater school in Stockholm. Their early work consisted of short, low-budget sketches posted on YouTube, which quickly attracted a cult following for their deadpan humor and absurdist takes on everyday life. In 2009, they were invited to perform at the Stockholm Comedy Festival, which brought them wider recognition and led to a recurring slot on Swedish public television's comedy showcase Släng dig i brunnen.

Their television breakthrough came with the series Savanna (2011–2013), aired on SVT, which featured a mix of studio sketches and location-based pranks. The show was praised for its innovative use of hidden cameras and its willingness to lampoon Swedish social norms, such as the national obsession with lagom (moderation). The duo also toured extensively, performing at major Scandinavian comedy festivals, including Just for Laughs Stockholm and the Oslo Comedy Festival.

Savanna's comedy is characterized by a blend of physical humor, deadpan delivery, and social satire. They have cited British sketch shows like Monty Python and Little Britain as influences, but their work also draws on Swedish absurdist traditions, particularly the films of Roy Andersson. Critics have noted their ability to find humor in mundane situations, such as waiting for a bus or navigating bureaucratic red tape, which resonates with Scandinavian audiences.¹

Beyond their mainstream success, Savanna has a niche following for their improvised live shows, where they often break the fourth wall and interact with the audience. In 2015, they released a series of audio sketches for Swedish Radio, which were later compiled into a podcast. The duo has also collaborated with the Swedish Institute to produce comedy shorts promoting Swedish culture abroad, a project that remains largely unknown outside Scandinavia. Their early YouTube videos, some of which have been removed, are considered cult artifacts among Swedish comedy enthusiasts.²
