Samsung Gear S2

The Samsung Gear S2 was a 2015 Samsung smartwatch running the Tizen operating system. Its circular display, rotating bezel, and compact interface made it one of the company’s most distinctive attempts to make smartwatch interaction quicker than touch-screen navigation alone.1

Design and interaction

The Gear S2’s defining feature was its rotating bezel, which let users scroll through notifications, widgets, and menus without covering the display with a finger. Two physical buttons supplemented the bezel: one generally served as Home, while the other handled Back. The watch used a round 1.2-inch Super AMOLED screen with a 360 × 360-pixel resolution, giving the interface a watch-like appearance while preserving touch input.

Samsung sold the watch in a sportier standard form and as the more traditionally styled Gear S2 Classic. Both used interchangeable 20-millimetre bands, although the cases and band attachments differed. The standard model emphasized a smooth, modern shell; the Classic used a darker, more conventional watch design. An IP68 rating provided protection against dust and temporary immersion under specified testing conditions, but it did not make the watch suitable for swimming or high-pressure water exposure.

Hardware and software

The Gear S2 combined a dual-core 1 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of storage, Bluetooth connectivity, Wi-Fi, and a 250 mAh battery in the standard model. Its software was based on Tizen, Samsung’s Linux-based platform for connected devices, rather than Google’s Android Wear system.1 The interface organized information into watch faces, notifications, applications, health functions, and small widgets designed for short interactions.

Health features included step counting, heart-rate measurement, inactivity reminders, and exercise tracking. These functions were useful for everyday activity monitoring but were not medical diagnostic instruments. Samsung also included NFC hardware, enabling contactless-payment functions in supported markets and with compatible services. Battery life varied with display settings, wireless connections, exercise tracking, and the cellular configuration, so advertised endurance was a usage-dependent estimate rather than a fixed runtime.

Models and compatibility

The principal hardware distinction was between Bluetooth/Wi-Fi models and cellular versions sold in selected markets. The cellular Gear S2 used an embedded SIM arrangement and could support calls or data away from a paired phone where carrier provisioning and network compatibility allowed it. This made it an early example of a smartwatch moving toward more independent operation, although it still depended on a phone for many setup, synchronization, and application tasks.

At launch, compatibility centered on Android phones meeting Samsung’s requirements, including a sufficiently recent Android release and adequate memory. Samsung later expanded support to selected iPhones through software updates and a companion application, but cross-platform support was more restricted than Android support. Application availability also reflected Tizen’s smaller ecosystem: Samsung’s store offered watch-specific software, but it did not provide the same breadth as the dominant smartphone app platforms.

Lesser-known aspects

The Gear S2 was notable not simply for being round but for treating the bezel as a primary navigation control; that choice reduced the need for repeated swipes on a very small screen and became a recurring design reference for later Samsung watches. Samsung also released multiple finishes and limited regional or carrier configurations, so exterior appearance and network capability were not identical across markets.

The watch’s Tizen foundation connected it to a broader family of Samsung televisions, appliances, and other embedded devices rather than to Samsung’s phone software alone.2 Its practical limitations were equally significant: the small screen constrained text entry, cellular models required carrier support, and the IP68 label did not eliminate concerns about soaps, salt water, or prolonged submersion. The Gear S2 therefore occupied an intermediate position between a phone accessory and a fully independent wearable.
